ST 66-13617-ALT 2747 BODY

TR 731-B F-F PAINT

NUMBER ON REAR OF BLOCK (327 ENGINE?):
3870020

VIN: 136176A107454

My brother-in-law had this in his barn for years. I didn't even know it was there all these years. Just asked him the other day what was under the cover and he unvieled it. :eek:

1966 2 door hardtop, rusted drivers 1/4, solid floors and trunk- (we pulled out the carpet), he thinks it's a non matching 327, auto on the column, real nice bucket seat interior (non original i'm sure), drum brakes all around, 10 bolt rear. the only rust on this car we could find was the 1/4 panel. Now the big question...how much is this puppy worth. It will need a total makeover. This car has been in his pole barn since 1978. graemlins/sad.gif

11B means the car was assembled the second week (B) of November (11) 1965 (since its a 66 model)

ST 66-13717-ATL, 66 = 1966, the 13717 usually (but not always) matches the begining of the VIN, and usually denoting the model. 13717 is not a valid number for 1966, more on that below... ATL is for Atlanta Georgia assembly plant...

TR 731-B This is the code for the seat type and color of the interior... "731" stands for Bright Blue bucket seat interior. Some cars like this one (but not all) also have the "-B" for bucket seats or "-A" for bench seat, although the "731" is also specific to buckets (so the "B" is redundant).

F-F is the paint color (upper body-lower body)... F is Marina Blue, so the car was Marina blue top and bottom.

2M 2 stands for "group2" and within that group, this car had the option code of "M". This is the option code for a Powerglide transmission... But there is no code listed for a console (should have been a "G" behind that "2" also, so sounds like a bucket seat car with a column-shifted automatic.

136176A107454 The VIN breaks down like this,
1= Chevrolet
36=V8 powered Malibu (or El Camino Custom, in your case a Malibu).
17= Malibu 2-door hardtop (hardtop only available as Malibu or Supersport
6=1966
A= Atlanta built
107454 = sequential build number (usually starting with 100001), so this car was the 7,454th "Chevelle" off the Atlanta assembly line during the 66 model year production...

The 3rd digit was even with V8 and odd with 6-cylinders... Malibus with 6-cylinders would begin with "13517...." Malibus used a 5 or 6, SuperSports used an "8", and no "7" was used in 1966, because there were no 6-cylinder SS cars (unlike 1965). So that Cowl tag should have the 13617 code and not the 13717 (Maybe there is another reason that someone else will share)...

So, its a Marina Blue 1966 Malibu 2-door hardtop (Sport Coupe) with Bright Blue factory bucket seat interior with a column-shifted automatic and a V8 engine stock (no idea if it was a 283 or 327.).

As for the engine...

I couldn't find "3870020"

But I did find a "3970020", 1970-1973 307...

I checked here:
http://www.mortec.com/castnum.htm

As for worth, there are a lot of factors...

the car's location, the body condition (including the rust you mentioned, does the 1/4 need replacing, or would a patch fix the rust), whether the car has a clear title or not, etc... If the car has been sitting since 1978...

Based on your description, I would estimate $1000-$3500 (maybe even more if it cleans up nicely)...

Yeah, what Tony said. :D

One exception, the paint codes are reversed. The first code is the lower body color while the second is the upper body (or vinyl top/convertible top) color.

Some plants up to 1968 used the "-A" and "-B" codes to indicate bench/bucket seats but that stopped for 1969 and 1970 as, as Tony mentioned, the trim codes were unique to bench or buckets anyway. In 71 and 72, the trim codes were the same for bench and buckets and "A51" followed the code if they were buckets and either "A52" or nothing followed if it was a bench seat.

Oh, yeah...no 13717 code either if it's a US built car. If it really says that, I'd sure love to have a picture of it for my ChevelleStuff decoding site. :D
