i have a 4 speed tranny out of a 71 chevelle. i found the build sheet of the car and it says i have a M20 4 spd but the owner who i bought it from says he is sure it is a saginaw. #s on the side of it are

there are probably more #s if I looked harder. can anyone help me out

Is the tranny aluminum or steel? Muncie=aluminun
Cast iron=sag.

how is the saginaw rated against the muncie performance wise

While the M20 (M21 and M22) have been widely associated with the only the Muncie brand, it is GM Regular Production Option code (RPO) for a 4 speed transmission, not specifically a Muncie.


M20 - 4 speed transmission
M21 - 4 speed transmission, close ratio
M22 - Heavy Duty 4 speed transmission
