I have a 71 Chevelle and the drivers side door won't open using the inside door handle. It works fine using the outside handle but I have to pull up hard 5 to 6 times for it to open from the inside. I'm hoping someone has seen this before so they can lead me in the right direction. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. :beers:

Check the plastic retainer bushings/clips. They may be worn and this will restrict travel on the rod that connects the lever to the actuator.

Thanks Levon ,when I have time will check that out.

Also be sure that the mechanism is lubed up real good. Many times something doesn't work or work well because of sticking parts. Spray lube everywhere.

Noob here, but this happened to me after I installed a latch from OPGI. I ended up having to take it to a body shop where their metal worker drilled some holes in the latch assembly from the inside. Took him 2 hours to get the door to open.

Next set of latches worked fine but OPGI wouldn't reimburse me anything! They said it was my fault....I guess I didn't screw on the 3 crews back on correctly  I guess spending over $5000 with them won't buy you any loyalty from them :(

the bushings or a bent rod may be your problem though. i would inspect it latch sounds like its working fine. Good luck..

A good clean and lube job got the latch on our el Camino working like new again. Forty year old dried out grease, dirt, and rust are the enemy most of the time. I'd had the vehicle painted and there was a lot of bodyshop dirt in there too. With the quality of repro parts, it's anyone's guess as to what is wrong.

I took off the door panel today and noticed that the rod was stopping about 1/8 inch too soon and it wasn't letting the latch open. I bent the rod about 1/4 inch with pliers making it a little shorter in length, and the door opens like it is brand new. Thanks for the help everyone.

it has to do with the rod that attach the handle to the latch
