: console wiring help PLEASE!!!!
BillDozer Mar 19th, 09, 3:36 PM hey guys i got my console wired up and everything works great except the dome light on the console, it stays on? It only comes on when the key is on and it stays on until i shut the key off. I tried to open and shut the doors and it had no effect on it. I even tried to turn the headlights off and on to see if that effected it and it still stays on. Can you help me with this please?
Thanks

Sounds like a wire connected wrong IF it just started happening when the console wires were installed.
tunes Mar 19th, 09, 5:28 PM What year Chevelle are you working on? Did you plug the console harness into the main wiring harness, or did you splice into some wires?
BillDozer Mar 19th, 09, 6:14 PM 72 chevelle i found the plug under the dash that connects to the console.
and its a automatic
tunes Mar 19th, 09, 6:29 PM If the console is plugged into the correct connection with the orange wire matching the orange wire and white wire matching white wire, everything should be ok. If not there is a short somewhere. The orange wire should have 12V and the white wire should be grounded when the doors are open. Can you check them with a volt meter?
BillDozer Mar 19th, 09, 8:26 PM my plug has black wires and grey no orange. But the button in my drivers door for my dome light has a black wire and a white. My console is out of a 70 chevelle and my car is a 72 does that matter or is it the same wiring??????????? thanks for all your help guys...
I would like the dome light to work in my console so please think hard guys LOLOLOLOL
tunes Mar 19th, 09, 8:52 PM I was going off a '69 which I thought should have the same color coded wires. Someone with a '72 may be of more help here. Anyway, gray wires are usually for instument lights, and may also be used for the shift indicator light on your console. I'm going to say the black wires must be for the interior light - one being 12V and the other being ground. You'll need to find which one is the ground. When the doors are closed this ground wire should be open and the light will be out. Somewhere this wire is being grounded all the time. Does this make any sense?

What color wires do you have going to console??? You should have (factory setup) a console harness and a console extension harness. (unless you wired everything yourself)
The power wire for that light should be a orange wire. (has power all the time)The ground wire for that light should be a white wire. It goes to door pin switches and gets grounded when doors are opened (or headlight switch turned fully CW)
Sounds like you have the light wired to a IGN only source and a constant ground.
BillDozer Mar 20th, 09, 5:22 PM http://www.flickr.com/photos/mynikon/3370550869/sizes/s/ok guys here the only two plugs i have under my dash not being used.
So which one is it for my console? ive tried both and each plug has a one hot wire all the time. But this is not helping my console dome light problem. Ive been stuck at this point for three days now and all i need is to figure out how to get my console dome light working. Like i said before the other lights on the console work great using the three prong conector. Please rack your brains on figuring out an alternative for my console dome light.

BillDozer Mar 21st, 09, 3:09 PM hello?
Dean Mar 21st, 09, 4:33 PM Picture is too small for me, I don't recognized the plug.
70ChevelleRagtop Mar 21st, 09, 6:06 PM Bill - I have all new wiring sitting on a shelf for my 70. I'll take a look at it and let you know what I find.

Pic is to small for me too, and also at incorrect angle. What colors are the wires going to each plug?
Steve S Mar 25th, 09, 2:16 PM The plug in the picture (center) looks like the radio plug and from your description of wire colors it is the radio plug. The other connector to the left looks like the flasher (pink wires?). Did your car originally have a console or did you add it?
Not all harnesses had provision for console lights. The console light plug has three terminals with a white, orange and grey wire.
