Hi, new to this great site! I've owned my '69 SS396 Chevelle for quite some years now, but could use some help decoding my trim tag - in particular, what does the "L" stand for.

Here's the relevent info:

Trim Tag:
ST69 13637KAN214059BDY
TR 796 57 S PNT
01B O8114 L

Note that L is quite a few spaces away from the 4, it lines up below the 57 & S.

Some other numbers/codes for reference:
VIN: 136379K380135
Engine Block Number: 3955272
Engine Casting Date: L 13 8 (Dec 13, 1968)
Engine PAD: T1216 JA
Partial VIN: 19K380135 (by oil pad)
Rear Axle Code: CF
Rear Axle Date Code: 12 9 8 (Dec 12, 1968)
Frame: 3943331 (s) 191
Date: 12 30 S1 XK

Again, curious what the "L" stands for.

Thanks again for the great site,

Hans

I don't think anyone knows...yet. It was thought to be an indication of a SS car, but it's been seen on 6-cyl 69 cars as well as 69 wagons.

I have 9 photos of different KAN tags for 1969 and 8 of them have the 'L' after the DP Seq Number. There doesn't appear to be anything unique about the single non-'L' car. See http://www.chevellestuff.com/69velle/69_trim_tags-kan.htm

It's been rumored too that some 1967-69 KAN cars were assembled in Lenexa, KS. as well as Leeds, MO. That hasn't been proven true or false yet to my knowledge, but maybe, maybe now, the non-'L' cars were Lenexa, KS-built and the 'L' cars were Leeds, MO-built. Along with this rumor is the Lenexa, KS cars had 'BK' on the trim tag instead of 'KAN'.
