Hey guy's,
I'm trying to decide whether to rebuild a 283 I have. I don't know if it's the original. I want a solid driver, but it needs to sound good too. I was also thinking of buying a crate GM 350 with a 700r tranny.
How good is the 283?

283's can be great engines for a driver and sound great too.
a 700r tranny will bolt up to this engine also for great gas mileage.
depends what you want to end up with.

on other hand 350 will make more power and be cheaper to build........

Go with the 350. I had a similar situation (rebuild a 396 or get a crate 454) a few years back and kick myself all the time for deciding on the 396. Bigger is better and a 350 crate with a roller cam would sound great.
