I am looking at buying a chevelle with a 454 in it. The 454 is out of a dually truck from the mid 80's. I am thinking that it is a low compression motor, but i was hoping someone could tell me a little about it by the number.

That will just tell you its '78 to '90 454. You need to post the 'pad' number/letters to find detail. It will start with T, and that doesn't mean 'truck' it means Tonawanda (the engine plant) Then it will only tell you how it left the engine plant, not whats been done to it. You have to remove a valve cover to get the head casting numbers.

If the motor is stock or at least pistons/heads its 7.8 to 1 all motors from 78-90 were low compression. unless it was out of a boat. If your looking for 400-425Hp out of the motor U could put a set of 65-67 closed chamber heads( there the smaller of the closed chamber heads) and raise compression to 9-1 put a mild cam in 278-284 duration range, aluminum intake to 5500rpm, 750-780 holley vacuum, headers with good exhaust system and your all set.
