: GM parts guys - magnetic oil drain plug??
davewho1 Mar 17th, 09, 4:03 PM Any of you GM parts guys or anyone else know if GM still makes a magnetic engine oil drain plug that fits the "older" cars like my '66 396?
I came up with PN 23011420 which subs to 24241872. But I'm not sure if it's got the correct non-metric threads. And, since I'm asking, what are the threads on the old drain plugs? 1/2 X 20, maybe?
Thanks a lot!!
engineguy Mar 17th, 09, 11:11 PM I think Mr. Gasket and others offer a magnetic drain plug that will fit your application.
novaderrik Mar 17th, 09, 11:32 PM Dorman sells stuff like that.
Finally Mar 18th, 09, 2:28 PM PN 23011420 is listed on GMPARTSDIRECT, Restoration parts, Chevelle, 1970. Probably same for 66. Oh, it's $12.
dand38s Mar 18th, 09, 11:31 PM Just checked for price on that part and they show a part number change. New part number is 24241872 and the list price shows to be $21.75. That seems very expensice to me.
67-468 Mar 19th, 09, 5:26 AM I got one from pep-boys a couple of years ago.

BillsCamino Mar 19th, 09, 7:07 PM Most ANY auto parts store will have a magnetic drain plug available.
IIRC, it's 1/2"-28 thread.
z15cam Mar 19th, 09, 9:24 PM Magnetic Drain plugs are a common item in most auto supply outlets. One thing I've done is place a speaker magnet on the bottom of the Oil Pan. It will stay on there. This is handy if you suspect that you may have metal for what ever reason in the oil system and you will eventually pull the pan or tare the engine down.
davewho1 Mar 21st, 09, 3:14 PM Thanks for the responses, everyone. Kinda want a GM piece cuz I'm funny that way. We'll see.
speedracer77 Mar 21st, 09, 11:48 PM Did you try calling GM? If you get a decent parts guy I'm sure he could get you the right P/N very easilly.

Yeah - he wasn't sure if the threads were correct on the P/Ns mentioned. When I figure it out, I will update this thread.
