If you're rebuilding your SBC anyway and it needs a re-bore, an Eagle 383 Balanced Rotating Assembly (about $700) is the way to go... Lots of grunt.... If done correctly with a mild cam, any 8.5-1 to 9-1 compression 383 with decent vortec heads should easily push you over 400 HP & 400 ft lbs of torque. Then you can venture off the porch & play with us RAT guys... (and weigh 200 lbs less to boot)

How much can you afford to invest?

This is my personal build-http://www.compcams.com/Community/Articles/Details.asp?ID=1945664039

It's pretty awesome to drive.

But, it wasn't super cheap either. I wanted to make as much power as I could on 87 octane, and it'd cost around 6 grand to duplicate. You can build a 383 for less than that, but it probably won't make as much power on 87.

i was going with the gm performance heads the cast iron ones and an egal rotating kit that gonna give me round 9.5 to 10.0 to 1 compression with a comp cam full roller with .458 max lift and 206 dur intake at 50 lift and 210 dur exhaust at 50 lift with full roller rockers. but like i said this is my first stroker im building and im not to sure about the clearances between block and rod bolts and rods with the cam and advice on measureing that and clearances i should aim for

your wondering about rod and block clearneces - i dont know how to measure it out other than by setting the crank and rods in there and trying to rotate it, chances are if your using a regular gm block your nuts on the rod caps are gonna hit and your going to have to do some grinding

very interesting bro if a 383 can make 500 hp there is no reason my 496 cant do it much easier with 113 more cubes

Yup exactly what he said! I just finished mine and made 407 HP and 409 LBS of torque with a 8.1:1 compression ratio.
