Did 70 Chevelle's come with sport mirrors on both sides?

No,In 1970 you could get a regular chrome mirror or a remote chrome mirror on the drivers side only. The passenger side was a dealer item. The drivers side sport mirror started in 72.

My first chevelle had them - I believe they were dealer installed, but not certain.

I may be wrong but I thought All Pass side Mirrors were dealer installed.

I installed a pair of these mirros on my '70 El Camino. The angle/contour of the doors, combined with the non-matching angle/contour of the mirror bases, created a few challenges, but they do look good. One issue, however, is the interference with the vent windows.

What are those mirrors off of, my 72 camino could use some?

To be honest I don't know. I don't claim to be an expert in these matters, but I'll take an educated guess that the cups that hold the mirrors are all pretty much the same. Another educated guess is that the bases are different depending on the contour of the door/year.

If there isn't a base that matches the contour of your door, it shouldn't make any difference which mirror you purchase. You'll have to play with the angle of the stud either way.

If you want some detail on how I got them to fit, lemme know.

Mirrors off of a 72 SS Chevelle will fit on a 70 Chevelle. The driver mirror mounts to the top of the door while the passenger mirror mounts on the side of the door. You can see this in the picture of the 70 ElCamino posted above. The only modification I remmebr having to do was drilling two holes for the base plate mounting screws. My 70 Chevelle SS has the sport mirrors from my 72 SS Chevelle. I believe you can see this in my signature pictures to my showroom.

I have a friend who bought a right hand mirror to install on his 72 and he had to modify the base to get it to fit. It sits on top of the door like the driver's side and looks original.
I also saw an original 72 SS at a car show last summer that had a right hand sport mirror on it and the owner still had the original window sticker. It was listed as one of the options. I was surprised to see it on the sticker though as I thought that 72 Chevelles only came with one sport mirror. That was what made them unique from the other GM intermediates.

Isn't the contour of an El Camino door different that that of a Chevelle?

Elco doors are different than Chevelle, I'm sure both mirrors are mounted the same on the elco.

To correct the angle of the "wrong" mirrors you can either shave the base of the mirror or, as I did, modify the studs that affix the base to the door. Using a thin grinding wheel on a Dremel tool I cut about halfway through pieces of 1/4" threaded rod. I bent them over and used some JB Weld to add strength. I'm guessing the angle was 20 degrees, give or take. This positioned the mirrors at the correct angle on the door.

Did 70 Chevelle's come with sport mirrors on both sides?

I have a Canadian 70 LS5 with sport mirrors on both sides. The driver's side is remote. I don't have the original window sticker for this car but I have the Canadian GM paper work that list sport MIRRORS. I don't know if the Canadian thing makes a differece, I'm just tellin ya what I have.

So those are original 70 SS mirrors? I thought about going that route with my 71 but just a PITA to try and find them. I may just stick with the chrome ones. I'm out near Buffalo, I hear ya about spring, soo damn sick of winter!

No, not Chevelle mirrors, I bought them at a swap - $15.00 - No Idea what they are off of, Some sort of GM product though. Had to change the angle slightly on the base. The LH is remote & the RH is manual.

I got the same mirrors also at a swap meet for for my build , paid $25.00.
I decided to go with the chrome instead....still have them if anyone wants them!

There were a ton of G body cars from the late 70s to through the 80s that had mirrors that looked just like that.

You need to keep the angle of the mounting leg close to the chevelle door so watch yourself.

So, did factory chevelles (70-72) come with a 'sport' mirror (painted color of car) on the drivers side, or did they come with a chrome one?
What is correct for an ss? sorry couldnt find any information about this

Only the 72 came with the body colored sport mirror on the driver's side.
The 70 and 71 cars came with a chrome mirror.

OK I see talk of 70's not having them as an option and 72 do so here I sit with a 71 wondering did they have them? keep debating if they really fit the era of the car? cloning my 71 into a heavy chevy but will have more options than where really offered in the heavy.

I think they were 71 and 72 only, seems I saw them in my 71 build manual.
I need a mounting bracket and grommit for mine if anyone has any. The 70-72 had a unique mounting leg that won't fit Elky's, Camaro's, or any other A-bodys. Gotta have the correct mirror and hardware for them!

Considering you can get a new reproduction drivers side for $75, that makes the passenger side only $200, hmmm. I've had them before, the passenger side is hard to see out of and harder to wash and wax. Don't think I'll buy another.

:noway: I don't think so. Some '71 and all '72 SS cars had Driver side Remote Mirrors painted the body color.

Trivia:
No Auto/ Truck built in 1970 was required to have TWO outside mirrors. I have a one owner 70 LS-5 El Camino, In 72--74 not sure of the year I had a gutter clip on mirror for the right side to get it state inspected. Then it went back under the seat. A FEDERAL was passed , Dont know when, Some time in the 70s/???. It REQUIRED all Cars/Trucks built for U.S. sales to have TWO outside rear-view mirrors.
My El Camino still has the ONE mirror on the drivers side D-33 Chrome remote (in 70 it was $10.55 ). The Fed. Law started the mirror mess. My El Camino still has ONE mirror and PA. Antique plates.

even in the 80's cars came with one mirror..
so I don't know what or when that fed law started or if it ever did

i got a set off a mid 80's full sided car..
if you are going to use this type you should plan on getting the door skin reinforcement that is inside the door innder the mirror..
other wise the door shin will tin ccan and crack the paint..

There is a survivor 71 Chevelle SS402 on e-bay, Canadian car, 19,000. miles. I remember this car locally in the 70's. Still does and always had driver body coloured sport mirror only.
