Hi,
I am looking at purchasing a 67 396 engine and according to seller, the casting number is 3902406. Where would I look on the block to verify this? Also, where would I look for the block number, TXXXXXX? Is this block always there or could it be scraped off?
Thank you,
Gary

casting no. is always there, but engine no. could be gone if block was decked.

Gary,
Welcome to Team Chevelle. According to http://www.mortec.com , 3902406 is the correct casting number for a 1967 396 engine. It should be at the rear of the block, near where the transmission or bellhousing bolts up to the block. It will be in fairly large numbers, so it will not be easy to miss. As engineer says, if the deck surface of the block has been machined at some time in the past, the stamped number on the pad in front of the right cyl head may be gone.

Casting number (3902406) will be on the top of the drivers-side bellhousing flange. This will be behind the cylinder head. These numbers will be large (1/2") raised numbers, and should be easy to reead if there's not grease or crud over them.
The "stamp" you mentioned (T####AA...) will be on the front passenger-side deck surface, just in front of the cylinder head, right above the water pump, and 8-10 inches above the fuel pump mounting area...
Both these numbers are on the top surface, so read them by looking "down" on them (assuming block is sitting as it would be installed...
A word of advice (since you sound like a novice)... Pretty much ALL passenger car Big Block engines will have the words "Hi Perf Passenger" cast into them (cast in several spots), EVEN low-performance versions... Don't let the seller tell you its a "rare" High Performance block, basedon those casting words...
