Hello i have 454. its a LS5 but there is a forged crank in it and i hope to get aluminum heads here for it too. I also got eldabrok jr. air in take with eldabrok carb. but i need a new cam you see cause i the one i tore or of it like 3 of the lobes were very bad and some of lifters too of course. but anyway. here my questions are

what does a rough idle mean. like whats it sound like
what does a easy idle sound like?
cause in the disciptions of the cams they say rough or easy or very rough idle. so i would like to know what this means?

if i want a hydraulic roller cam. i have to have roller rockers right?

if i got a hydraulic flat tappet cam can i use roller rockers?

and i don't know to much around engine but very little. but anyway

now whats it mean when it says retro fit for the cam?

and the cam i am looking at is Lunati voodoo hydraulic flat tappet cam. here is the part number if anyone wants to check it out. 60213

I'll start with the easy stuff:

If you use a hydraulic roller cam you DON'T need roller rockers. You will need roller LIFTERS though.

If you use a hydraulic flat tappet cam, you can use roller rockers.

A 'retro' fit cam is one designed to replace a factory flat tappet cam. (You would "retro fit" the engine to use a roller cam when it was designed to use a flat tappet.)

For an "easy" idle just go next door and listen to your neighbors Taurus.

The more overlap and duration you have, the "rougher" the idle (typically)

To me this would be a "choppy" idle

This would be more towards the "rough" idle but still streetable

A good old CC 282S solid lifter cam will be STREET rpm-range powerful and have a cackle to it. One step up to the 294S and it will cackle more!

As always, jmho.

And please note, nothing fancy at all here and I'm a solid lifter cam guy! I love the sewing machine sound b/c it means power to me!
