: Spindles : when are they not re-usable? (w/ pics)
BB_Mike Mar 14th, 09, 9:47 PM I have a set of drum spindles I want to use for my project, and I will be adding discs on to them. Larger then normal discs, you know, the go fast (stop fast) stuff.
Below are two pictures. I'm guessing the only area of concern would be the inner bearing race. The appears to bit a bit of a "channel" on the verticle - wall - side of the inner bearing location.
images are about 5 megapixel for clearity. :)

brians65 Mar 15th, 09, 12:21 AM depends on what brake set up you are gonna go with my spindles on my 65 look about the same as yours and i went with the ssbc set up and havent had any problems with them and they work great with the drum spindle other wise you may need to get some disc spindles for some of the other kits and if you do that you may as well jump ahead and then get spindles and all from same company
BB_Mike Mar 15th, 09, 11:17 PM Well I reckon I should just go for it, huh?
I'll just make it a point to tear it all down after 6k miles and check them out.
Mike
If you end up needing a set of drum spindles just let me know...

I should have bought yours just to save me the 5+ hours of work to get these out! The shoes where all kinds of siezed up in the drum.
FIG, do yours have the "notched" ring on the inner portion like mine does?

Hey Bill since mine are housed 30 miles away any chance you can answer Mike's question? :)

I'll have to look JJ...mine still have drums on them.
PCB67SS Mar 16th, 09, 3:30 PM That spindle doesn't look good in my opinion.....I would replace it for sure.....Its not good when wheels, spindles, or ball joints fail.....I think we may have a gentleman here who experienced something to that effect not to long ago.....I believe I heard it speed up the sale of a gorgeous wagon in fact.
And he had all new stuff and seems to know a quite a bit about cars......
novaderrik Mar 16th, 09, 4:43 PM how does the bearing ride there?
personally, i'd do a quick mock up without a grease seal and see how it looks like that.
BB_Mike Mar 16th, 09, 9:16 PM Good call Derrick. I'll get a set of bearings tomorrow. Heck, I'll need them anyways, right?
PCB67, be nice to our friend Bill. ;)
JWagner Mar 16th, 09, 9:48 PM That looks like a minor surface blemish to me. I see no problem as long as the bearings are a snug fit on the spindle. Now I have got to admit that I repaired a spindle that had the little bearing spin on the spindle and tear it up badly. I brazed over the damaged surface and turned it on a lathe to the correct size. 12 years later it is still working fine on a daily driver. So figure about 100k miles on that repair.
Chris R Mar 19th, 09, 5:29 PM That doesnt look too bad. I think you would be fine to clean them up and re-use them. Or if you dont want to re-use them, they would at least be worth hanging on to to pass on to someone else. They certainly look usable IMO.
pdq67 Mar 19th, 09, 8:59 PM As stupid as this sounds, but has anybody ever center punch "divotted" a crank snout?
Same deal here if the spindle bearing surface is a little loose, imho.

PCB67SS Mar 19th, 09, 9:18 PM Maybe I'm wrong or my eyes are giving up....which is a fact....But it appeared to me the bearing had chattered and pushed or relocated metal toward the rear of the spindle creating a more rounded area in the seal to spindle area.....But then again my eyes are not what they once were.
