Just found this 1968 ss chevelle and I need help W/ the engine stamp , cowl tag and value.
Cowl tag reads;
0 1 a 7212
st 68 13837 kan 6538 body
tr 756 b g-2 paint

engine stamp reads;
to406tkb

In my excitement to look at the car I forgot to write down vin# , but did look at it an did see the first few #'s 13837.....

I believe it to be a 396 325 hp engine but couldnt tell because air cleaner sticker was faded . Auto. , w/ ac , ps , pb ,buckets w/ consle , and vinyl top. I think its a 12 bolt rear also. Fairly solid car w/ rust on both fenders at bottom rear , doors are solid w/ only surface rust on bottom inside , left quarter has rust about 2" up all around quarter panel lip and behind wheel opening , right quarter has very little rust on lip and some behind wheel opening.Vinyl top is shredded , paint is faded.
Interior is pretty rough . Seats need to be recovered , carpet , headliner and door panels also need replaced.
Glass is intact but w/s is cracked.
Odom. reads 31k but is believed to be 131.
Has SS hub caps also , in fair condition.
Is this the correct factory engine ? I found the # stamped on the pass. side front of engine. Do I need to look for any other engine #'s?
Owner wanted $6000 for it but I thought it might be a little high considering the condition. By no means is this car a basket case but it does need to be restored.
Any help you can give would be great. If you know of any other site that might offer more info. on this car please let me know , mostly intersested in find a ball park figure on its value , I know very little about 68 chevelles. Thanks ...

Here's how I'd read it:
01A = build date. First week of January. Happy New Year!
68 = 1968 model
13837 = SS 396 2 door sport coupe smile.gif
KAN = Kansas
756 = Gold vinyl bucket seats
G = Ash gold metallic paint
B = Black vinyl top

>engine stamp reads to406tkb

That doesn't look right, according to my book. But I'm no expert. My book says that this number means:

Tonowanda plant, built on April 6. The last three letters are the "code". My book shows 68 396's having one of seven different two letter codes starting with "E".

I found a reference that says TKB = a 71 or 72 L-47 402 ci truck motor.

I'm sure an expert will weigh in on the engine...

I found a reference that says TKB = a 71 or 72 L-47 402 ci truck motor Thats what it is, the first letter in the suffix is a T and that denotes a truck engine.
