: Aftermarket brake setup with 17'
10bolt Mar 11th, 09, 4:58 PM I just purchased the Foose Nitrous II's 17x8 and 17x9 for my 69 chevelle (front disk rear drum). I am now looking into some aftermarket brake systems because the stock drums in the back will now stand out with the new rims. I am sure its been brought up before but does anybody have any suggestions for a good reasonable priced package out there. I would like to get some cleaner looking slotted or drilled for the front and back. Any suggestions on rotor size? Or companies selling a complete package?

Baer makes a good product. Find an authorized retailer near you for pricing.
10bolt Mar 11th, 09, 7:05 PM Ya those bear brakes look great but expensive....Anybody know of anybody a little cheaper and what size disks would you recommend for 17' rims?
GenPac Mar 11th, 09, 7:27 PM 11" rotors are standard for the front on '69 brakes. for 17" wheels, you can fit upwards of 14" rotors, depending on caliper to wheel clearance --
One thing to remember though, as you get larger rotors, you need to ensure clearance to the wheel w/caliper... not all 17" wheels will fit.

Send me a pm for Baer brake pricing. ;)
pist0lpete Mar 12th, 09, 12:37 PM The Baer 2 piston stuff is the same thing as the C5 vette brakes but with some fancy paint. You can do the C5 vette conversion for much cheaper check with Tobin at Kore3.
CHELKAMINO Mar 12th, 09, 4:18 PM I'm getting my set up from Tobin at Kore3. They are a C5 Corvette set up. You can use the drop down boxes to put in what you do and do not want from the kits. Give Tobin a call, he is a very nice guy and very informative!!

bochnak Mar 12th, 09, 4:38 PM Kore 3 was already mentioned.
When you get the wheels, print the template and see how much brake you can fit in those wheels:

You can't beat C5/C6 stuff for the price, and can't wait to do the swap myself.

The CPP big brake uses a proprietary rotor.
KORE3 uses an over the counter rotor.

Derek69SS Mar 27th, 09, 10:26 AM The C5 'vette stuff is hard to beat for the money  You just need to make sure you have about 3/4" of clearance from the back of the spokes to the mounting surface of the wheel, as the C5 calipers stick out past the hub & rotor.
66SOFTTOP Nov 3rd, 09, 1:25 PM that wilwood set sure looks pretty
70 ELK Nov 3rd, 09, 2:09 PM I am seriously considering Wilwood brakes for my re-do of my originally purchased Camino. Since my daughter will take it over when I can't drive it any more, I have to look not only to ease of maintenance today, but guess at the future. Accordingly, I have two questions:
1. How does the caliper to spoke clearance, and caliper to wheel clearance, compare to the C5 and C6 systems?
2. Are the brake pads and rotors readily available at parts stores, i.e., are they "stock" OEM such as Corvette, other GM, or Ford?

ProdigyCustoms Nov 9th, 09, 12:55 PM Wilwood has the best caliper to spoke clearance in the industry. What wheels do you have and what size brakes (RE:12,13,14 inch) are you looking for?
70 ELK Nov 10th, 09, 10:40 AM I do not have my wheels, yet, but will very probably use 18" Budnik Shotgun (X Series) . In talking with Budnik, they assure me that they can build the wheel to fit the brakes, but I do not want to go too overboard with offset, and it is the offset that concerns me with the Z06 brakes. On the other hand, I really like the ease--particularly many years down the road--of finding replacement pads and parts for GM stuff. Indeed, even now, I want to be able to drive across the USA and not be concerned about finding replacement pads or parts, which is why I ask about whether Wilwood calipers accept OEM pads?
ProdigyCustoms Nov 10th, 09, 11:04 AM No they do not use factory pads. Wilwood uses their own pads. We have them as well as Summit, Jegs, local speed shops, they are very common. And Wilwood has been building this caliper for a long time and are not stopping anytime soon. I never had to get a emergency set of pads before, always had fair warning. But if you worried about it for $70 we can throw in a extra set of front and rear pads. You won't wear out 2 sets in your lifetime unless you dailey drive it. Smmit / Jegs have them for $41 a pair front or rear.
You are correct about your concerns on offset with the ZO6 set up. It takes 1.80" of caliper to spoke clearance to clear those calipers, and that moves the center out, making for less lip on the wheel. The (4) piston Dynalite 12.19 kit need .07 Caliper clearance because Willwood move the rotor face and caliper back away from the spokes. The big (6) piston 13" and 14" kits only need .10 caliper to spoke clearance, again, they move the rotor face and caliper back away from the wheel spokes.
On the wheels, we are Budnik dealers also. So we can hook you up there to and would work with Budnik on getting maximum lip on the wheels.
70 ELK Nov 10th, 09, 2:55 PM Thanks for the quick reply with lots of useful, and persuasive, information. You are a great salesman, and I do not mean that in a bad way. You are correct about the pads, as I drove a 3/4 ton pickup 168,000 miles on the original pads and they were still fine when I sold it. The Camino will be my daily driver--as it was when I bought it 40 years ago--once I get it running, again, but living in a rural area where most miles do not involve stopping, and considering my age, two sets of pads should last the rest of my life. I am just considering my daughter, who will take it over when I cannot drive anymore.
My only question is: Are Wilwood brakes American made? I do not want much of anything from China, and not only want American quality, but want to support Americans.
Thanks for your great help.

As for made in America? Made in America.
if you need any more information just let me know

I'd skip the 4 piston dynalites and go directly to the six piston dynapro's.
