my cars cowl tag has eroded away. it was partialy there when i did the frame off, but not enough for any imformation. so my questions are, does the cowl tag match the vin? can you have a new one made? is it legal? i believe the car has original trim and paint and options, its a 138 car so theres no question there. and through restoration process found all the hiddin stampings and they all matched the vin. and no i didnt find any build sheets. so if you can have one made how would you estimate the vin sequence numbers with the fisher bodys cowl tag sequence numbers

Cowl tag matches some of the VIN tag - just the section that shows which vehicle it is.
Doesn't match the sequence numbers and it's not an acceptable tag for DMV.

Since the tags are available from various sources ,I'll give you 1 I know so you don't need E-bay or Craigs.

For the 138 hardtop car, the cowl tag will usually read 13817
BUT, the info on the cowl tag doesn't always match the first 5 digits of the VIN (usually, its 6-cylinder cars that have the descrepancies with stuff like135 VIN/136 Cowl, etc...
Trim Tags... About $200, and I think legal in all states, except Oklahoma...
