Plz help me decod a chevelle i just bought. dont know if it is a ss or not. it has one large fuel gage, then speedometer, then clock, 4 speed, ss door panels, ss grille. it alos has round tail lights in the bumper.

83,858th Chevelle :D First Chevelle was numbered 500001 in 1972.
Body Number plate decodes to:

This does not mean it is not a factory SS. Starting in 69 the SS was an option and not a separate model and therefore you cannot tell from the VIN or Cowl tag unless: If the fifth digit in the vin was a "W" (454)then it had to be an SS because the 454 was only availalbe in the SS. If it had a "U" (402)then it probably was an SS. In 72 you could get an SS with 350 2bbl. The only way to tell for sure is to find the build sheet or pop. It sounds like it could be an SS (correct dash emblems, etc). But these items are easy to add to a malibu. Lot of folks are cloning the 70-72 chevelles to be SS's.
