Looking for a little help in finding the originality of this transmission. I have a BW transmission with
the following stampings. On the cast iron maincase pass side J-3-71 T 10-1B WG DIV Q2.
On the drivers side it reads WM1 12 stamped vertical on the spacer (spacer is the only
part thats aluminum) between the tailshaft and the maincase. On the very top of the
maincase it has one letter H stamped. Cast iron tailshaft has T10K-7 WG DIV H-2-71 with
a single letter G stamped at the very rear. Sidecover is a 9 bolt, reverse is on the
tailshaft, input is 10 spline and output is 27. I noticed that the input shaft is much thicker
than my M21. Application and decode help for this transmission is appreciated.

Dave.

A couple of photos would be good.

All of the printed information I have contradicts the casting date info you have listed. The T10-1B cast iron case was used in Chevrolets and Corvettes from June of 1959 through January 1961 when they changed to T10-1C aluminum cases. The iron extension housing should be either T10-7 (1957 Corvette only), T10-7A (1958-59 Vette, 1959 Pass), T10-7B (1960-61 Pass & Vette) or T10-7D (1962-63 Pass & Vette). The input gear should be the standard 1-1/8"-10 spline as is with all Muncies 1963-1970. The WM1 12 stamping is the build date code: W=Warner Gear, M=December, 1=First day of month, 1=1971, 2=second shift.

That's the best I can do for now.

This is a GM transmission isn't it? Iron T10's were also used in Fords from 1960 through 1966!

Post some photos!!!

Thanks for the reply David. I'm at work currently so this afternoon I'll snap a couple of pics, confirm the numbers and post them here.

David,
Here's the link to my cars and the transmission pictures.

http://community.webshots.com/user/boboxer

Click on the RS/Z28 painted and you should find them on the 2nd page. If they don't appear right away please check back since there can be a delay up to a 1/2 hr sometimes for new pics to post.

Thanks again.

If I remember correctly ...The BW trans was used up to 1963 in Corvette and Impala then Muncie went from 1963 to 1974 then the BW trans came back. The old BW looked very similar to the late 70s BW. It was used in Camaro Firebird and S10. Some of the late BW had a very low first gear and makes a nice set up when used with a tall rear end gear. Gives final drive ratios like a 5 speed.

Dave, What you have is a 1st design Super T-10 which was only available as an over-the-counter complete transmission designed as a direct replacement for the early Corvette T-10. They were made from 1968 through early 1972 and did have 10-spline input and 27-spline outputs like the early T-10 and early Muncies. There were several gearsets available for them including 2.23:1, 2.43:1, 2.64:1 and 3.44:1 first gear ratios. Some even had 9310 nickel inputs (with 0.060" wider gear) and clusters installed (Also had a 0.060" wider front gear to mate with the wider input) which had much higher torque capacity. Later 2nd design ST-10's all had 26-spline input and 32-spline outputs like the 71-74 Muncies.

All in all, a good transmission. The only weak point is they have a tendency to seize first gear to the mainshaft. There is no sleeve on the mainshaft for 1st gear like Muncies and ST-10's.

Thank you David. This transmission was in my 70 when I purchased it and shifted very smooth before it was removed. The looks of the maincase is very similiar to my original BW HD 3spd for my 67 Camaro but.... I believe the number on the side of it reads T-16.
Anyway....I'll probably sell the 4spd and use the proceeds to rebuild the original M21 for my Z.

Thanks!
Dave

meathead95,
The 302DZ crank is worth NOTHING! I'll haul it away for you!

Seriously, the Saginaw trans is not worth much, reputation for failing, rated at 300 lb/ft but it does have good ratios. A healthy 327, a Saginaw (until they blew up!!) and 3.73 made a good combo.
