Does anybody know what the largest rims you can fit on a 72 without modification are? Same question for the tires as well. I have front discs and I'm also not sure if they would be sufficient to stop the car with bigger rims and tires or if I would need to upgrade. I would like to get 9" wide on the back but not sure if that will rub or not

9" wide wheels fit easily on a 72 Chevelle, even on the front with correct backspacing/offset. Are you wanting to run 15", 17", etc? 10" and 11" have been installed on the 70-72 body style as well. A 15x10 wheel needs a 5.5" bs and you can run a 295-50 tire with no problem. A 17x11 w/6" to 6.25" bs with a 285 to 315 width tire fits as well. Sometimes some slight extra fender lip trimming is done, moreso if the car is lower than stock, for extra clearence for side motion and body sway. I have put a 17x9.5" with 5" bs and a 275-40 on and they fit with room to spare!

Thanks!
I'm really looking for 18" rims. 275's would be great, that's about what I'd like to put on! What size backspacing would I need for 18's? Do you have 9.5" on the front as well?

I have 18x10's with 6" bs and 295's on the rear of my 71 Monte and they fit great and it has less room than a Chevelle because of the low cut fenderwell. I have 8" on the front but I have tried my 17x9.5" w/5" bs and a 275-40 on the front of both A and G-bodies and it fits well and clears and looks great on both bodies!

Ok, I found a set of rims I want and they are 18x9.5 with 5.5 backspacing, would these fit on a 72 malibu? Not sure if fitment is different between the SS and malibu

Those will fit your 72 just fine. You can go a 275-305 width so you have quite a few choices!

In a word, NO! Not without cranked up 80's air shocks anyway!

Does someone know if it is possible to fit a 12" wide rim under a '71-'72 Chevelle without modifying anything? I think the correct backspacing would need to be 5.5" to 6", but not 100% sure...
And what about using some 325-50-15 tires?

thanks,

Claude. :)

I believe you'll need to relocate the lower shock mounts inorder to run a 15" wheel with that width. So, the answer to your question is no.
