: If you lit a match inside a mirrored ball....

If you lit a match inside a 110 foot mirrored ball with 100% reflectivity, 100% oxygen and where there was no place for the light or heat to escape, - Would you be blinded in the ensuing light storm or totally vaporized?

I would say neither right off the bat...but if I had to chose, I'd say the light. Because the match is only going to burn the little bit of wood it's made from....

Neither would happen. The match can only put so much energy in to your Glass Ball of Oxygen. That match will only give off about 1 candlelight and maybe a few calories of energy. (The match only has so many molecules to combine with the oxygen.) One candle light is hardly enough to blind one. And a match is hardly enough to warm up even a little of the oxygen. There would be no explosion, just a vigorous but short lived flame.

If I was imagining I was in that glass ball, I'd hope I have two more matches. Three strikes and I'd be out.

You guys need to take the pot smoking poll in CE!!! Who even thinks of this sort of thing??? :D

Oxygen doesn't explode, it has to have something to combine with. As Bill said, it would be a flash in the pan then it would be dark again. There isn't enough mass in a match to really effect anything, and a 110' ball contains a lot of space (696,910 cu.ft.) to absorb the products of the combustion.

ok, dude....admit it....your having trouble in critical thinking class and your fishing for answers....you cheater. :D

Im so damn hot the match would vaporize in that ball before it were lit. ;)

I would set up a dance pole in it and have some hot girls dancing for me and since the ball is mirrored I could see all angles of her dancing.:D

How would you tell what happened until you opened it up? I say nothing based on what conditions you set. Once you change those to open it up, then the show starts

Still no show... The heat of one match in comparison to the volume of air in the ball, The overall heat rise would be nearly immeasurable..

100% oxygen + ignition source = Incineration..

O2 is not flammable it only supports fire. Fire needs two things, Fuel and Oxygen. In this example, The only fuel is a single match. It will burn in an instant but no big bang.

The human body and clothes would be the additional fuel in this senario. Would the match "flash" hot enough to ignite hair, clothing and flesh and would the volume of oxygen allow for complete incineration or do I just go blind from the initial flash of the match??? This has bothered me for some time now and I was hoping for a definitive answer....

Of course the next concern I had was what if it was a road flare I was igniting?

So many questions and so little time....

64mal beat me to it - you'd be dead- you can;t live with 100% pure O2... air is something like 78% Nitrogen I think.

I can't believe I answered this post.

You can live with 100% O2 at zero atmosphere level for a long time, now below 1 atmosphere level you will develop oxygen toxicity and cause you to go into a grand maul seizure, and since you are below 1 atmosphere that means you are under water H 2/0 and you will drown:yes:

Yes. 100% oxygen isn't even required.:D
