: What is the purpose of this?
asbill71 Mar 9th, 09, 9:17 PM I picked up a 4 bolt 350 and a steel crank today. The guy said it was .040 over and the crank was 20/20. It was really cheap and in a really dark garage. Once I was home and got my trusty flashlight, I noticed all 8 cylinders are sleeved. there is a step at the bottom of the cylinder and it looks like it was done right. the block was line honed, new cam bearings and freeze plugs.
because of the price I am not too concerned, but I plan on building a 383 with this block hopefully 425-475 horse. Should I worry about the sleeves? I plan on having the block checked out at a machine shop before building.

SS402 Mar 9th, 09, 10:48 PM Should I worry about the sleeves? I plan on having the block checked out at a machine shop before building. No worries if it checks out with the machinist, looks like a good platform for your stroker
64SS427 Mar 9th, 09, 11:02 PM Wow! That's really unusual. It cost somebody a lot of $$$$ to do that. Are the casting numbers anything fancy? DZ 302 maybe? I've been told that a sleeved block is stronger than a standard block, don't remember the reasons. That block is good forever now unless you put a rod through it.

asbill71 Mar 9th, 09, 11:23 PM The casting # is 3970010 which mortec says
3970010....302.....69....4...Z-28 Camaro
3970010....327.....69....2...Trucks and industrial
3970010....350...69-80...2 or 4
JWagner Mar 9th, 09, 11:29 PM I am a little flummoxed by this. Why would all 8 be sleeved?
pdvanocudadave Mar 10th, 09, 11:50 AM That block has all the signs of being a Baker built ,650 horse power,350 engine
pdvanocudadave Mar 10th, 09, 12:20 PM Could you post a better picture of the crank. It looks like it is razor edged
DZAUTO Mar 10th, 09, 1:43 PM MAKE ABSOLUTELY SURE IT IS A 4IN BORE!!!!!!!!
There have been 327-350 blocks sleeved with UNDER sized sleeves, then finish bored to 3.875 (283) or 3.75 (265) for use in a STOCK 55-56-57 Chevy class.
I used to see an ALL STEEL stock bodied 56 Nomad at Ennis (Dallas), TX with such an engine. It was running the STOCK Carter WCFB 2x4 carb setup, BUT with a very tall intake manifold (maybe the manifold for some reason didn't fall within the rules).
He ran a 6-series rear gear, tuned about 8500rpm at the finish line at about 112mph!
No, I never took any pictures of the car! :(
pdvanocudadave Mar 10th, 09, 2:12 PM Also, remove your oil filter bracket and make sure it has not been reworked on the block in that area.
texasgilbert Mar 10th, 09, 2:36 PM It was probaably sleeved because the 0010 is a good block and they probably had it at
.060 and decided the block was worth sleeving. I worked in the Thermo King machine shop and sleeved blocks all the time. Never had an issue with them but I did them right.
asbill71 Mar 10th, 09, 8:00 PM here is a closer pic of the crank, casting# 1182

pdvanocudadave Mar 11th, 09, 1:38 PM Your pictures are a little dark and hard to see.I think the best thing to do here is to call Baker Engineering and ask them. The person at Baker that you need to talk to is TJ.There phone number is 616-837-8975.Keep us filled in on what you find out about this engine. Are you thinking of having it built back to a 650 HP motor ?
asbill71 Mar 14th, 09, 3:12 PM actually I have found a BBC and put this block & crank on craigslist earlier today
Schurkey Mar 14th, 09, 3:34 PM One of the discount mail-order speed shops used to (and perhaps still does) sell "rebuilt blocks" where all the cylinders were sleeved; and the mains line-honed.
Good way to make a profit on worn-out or damaged blocks that otherwise would go to the Chinese as scrap iron.
speedracer77 Mar 15th, 09, 11:05 AM Cost to sleeve all eight cylinders is a lot more than an the block is worth. Only time I have seen it done is on numbers matching blocks that are near impossible to find. IIRC, the cost of eight sleeves (just the parts) is a lot more than the $150 or so a standard 4 bolt 010 block can be bought for.
