I am looking at a car VIN 136378k122433. Is there a difference between a Malibu and a sedan? If so, can I tell from the VIN # what it is?

1 = Chevrolet
36 = Malibu, Custom El camino, Concours or Estate V8
37 = 2 door sport coupe (this would be a different number for sedan)
8 = 68 chevelle
K = Kansas City
12243 = seqeunce number

A sadan has a fixed post between the front and rear side windows. They are also reffered to as 'post' cars becuase of the post. I think it was most commonly seen on 4 door models.

The Malibu is simply a series of the Chevelle line in 1968 like the 300, 300 Deluxe, Super Sport, etc. In this instance, all 68 Malibus were hardtops (or coupes as they call them sometimes) so, yes you could tell a Malibu from a sedan (post car). If it has a post, it's a 300 or 300 Deluxe - assuming a 2-dr.

A Chevelle 300 2-dr sedan VIN starts with 13127 (6-cyl) or 13227 (V8).
A Chevelle 300 Deluxe 2-dr sedan VIN starts with 13327 (6-cyl) or 12427 (V8).
A Malibu 2-dr coupe VIN starts with 13537 (6-cyl) or 13637 (V8).
A SS396 2-dr coupe VIN starts with 13837 (V8 only, naturally).

See here (http://www.chevellestuff.com/generic/production_numbers.htm) for model/series and production numbers.

FWIW, anyone running across a 68 Malibu 4-dr wagon with VIN staring with 13545 (6-cyl), grab it. Only 5 built :eek: :eek:
