I am considering using it as a base coat with SPI Universal Clear when I repaint my car.

It is a good bit less expensive than Omni and MUCH less expensive than PPG DBC and is available at a local supplier.

How does it compare to Omni?

Thanks, Joel

Dimension is Sherwin Williams buget brand. We have used it in the past on some budget jobs. it is good stuff but coverage can be pretty poor on some colors. So if you end up buying twices as much, you might as well get the good stuff.

Sherwin Williams Ultra 7 base is one of my favorites.

I have used it too..great with light colors..use it primarily on small pieces. For full paint jobs I like the 7000 series..worth the extra money in my book.

Thanks, for the replies.

As far as I know, there is only one place in my area that sells SW Auto Paint and from what I understand, they just sell the Dimension, don't offer the Ultra 7.

I priced the SW Dim, PPG DBC and Omni in gallons (does not include reducer/activator) in the color I want. (93 Ford EG code - Electric Current Red Poly)

DBC $565

Omni $210

SW Dim $132

At these prices I could use a lot more of the SW Dim and still be saving a lot of money over PPG DBC. However, I don't want to do it, no matter how much I might save, if I can't expect to get a good results.

Is DBC worth THAT MUCH more?

I used OMNI on my car. If I remember correct, OMNI is an air dry base, while DBC is catalysed. Would have used SPI Universal Clear, but had already bought the OMNI. Overall, I was very happy with the results of the OMNI. My color is nice. Coverage was pretty good (Frost Green applied over light grey 2K). Cut the OMNI clearcoat with 1000, then 1500. Finished it with heavy cut; then fine cut; then machine glaze. Has held up well. Have about 1000 miles on the car. Driven in rain and more than a few trips down the 1/4 mile. No stone chips on 1/4's. JMHO, a good medium priced paint system. Probably about the least expensive paint that I would use. You will have to check- color availability often becomes a big issue with the budget paints.

Joel,
We painted my 67 with it. Looks really good IMHO. Red also.
Used this brand due to the body shop that painted it did also and then I sanded and repainted myself when I went and got it with the help of a friend who sprayed it. Took him for a ride in it today.
Just have to make sure you get good coverage = more coats until you have a uniform color. I believe red takes more anyway. That's why I repainted---the "restoration shop" did not have good coverage and you could tell.
I believe I bought 1 1/2 gallons of base not counting the reducer.
Then, use the best clear you can get. I used a high solids clear on mine. Wet sanded and buffed.
Been painted close to two years and still looks like it did when I finished. No regrets.
Hope this helps.

Herbie, Thanks for the reply, exactly the type of feedback I was hoping to get.

Anyone else?
