ok I have a 69 malibu not a ss or nothing orignally came with a I6 4speed 10 bolt then got upgraded to a 454 auto 12 bolt and when I got it the 10 bolt was back in the car. My question is if I rebuild this 10 bolt will it handle 5-600 hp from my 496 or do I need to go to at lease a 12 bolt any option would be great.

With no traction , it will probably live. With anything sticky it will break. I would look for a 12 bolt or anything else aftermarket from Moser etc.

Which 10 bolt?
8.2 10 bolt isn't very strong ,8.5's close to the 12 bolt strength.
Might last a while as long as you don't get too much traction - ie:slicks ,etc.

its a 8.2 I have a 12 bolt if I want it but wasn't sure if it was needed I am trying to save money as much as possible so if the 8.2 is no good I might go after the 12 onless there another option.

I'd not put any $$$ into an 8.2.

Yes, you will need the 12 bolt.

notsorryulost,

i would say you have done very well and been fortunate enough that a axle or cross shaft/spider gear has not failed yet.
when 1 does fail @ 100mph and launchs a tire/axle, i hope you are protected by a roll cage because you may need it.
i feel you are running on borrowed time if that is a 8.2 10 bolt. tom
