Hey everyone,

I have done a lot of research and keep coming back to the same question... is my 1970 Chevelle a true SS or not?

I was reading through some decoding posts and it really looks like you all know what you are talking about and a little help would be appreciated.

I have already read a lot on the engine deccoding and the article about SS or not: http://www.chevelles.com/shop/ss_ident.html but keep getting confused when I code the engine. The body physically looks like a SS inside and out(i.e. body, dashboard, emblems, etc) but the engine comes back as a 307/200hp.

I would appreciate any help you can give... even if it's bad news!! -- gulp!!

VIN: 136370L148463
Engine: 10L148463T1110CNF

Thanks,

Matt

Looks like you have a clone, Matt. The vin # matches the engine # and the CNF code is a 307-200HP. No SS Chevelles came with a small block in 70 either. The good news is....you have a number matching Malibu !!!!

Thanks Second_chance_SS! I appreciate that. I was afraid it was, but I guess I just needed to hear from someone else.

Now that I know it is a clone... I am just not sure of keeping the 307 and maybe drop a 396 or 454? The 307 is in need of a rebuild so either way it is coming out.

Would it be smart to switch out the motors?

I personally would NOT put a whole bunch of extra value on a numbers-matching 307 in a clone vs. a NOM clone. If it were my car, I'd pull the 307, put it in the garage, and drop a crate 502 in that bad boy!

I dropped a 454 in mine, I can beat alot of factory SS cars now. Don't be to concerned with an SS car unless the previous seller passed it off to you as an "SS". Have fun with the the car the way it was intended to. to me that is most important.
