I have a friend who picked up a 396 - not sure what it's from or what the details about it - here are the numbers

Head - 3933148 casting number
block castin ends in 272 - pad number shows TO324JQ

The pistons are domed not flat - look like 10:1

Any info would be great as to what it is and where it came from.

Thks Guys,

According to the information he recvd from the owner it was out of a police car, guess being an Impala it could be possible.

Are those heads worth toying with, considering the chamber size or should he replace the heads with a better set.

A "JO" code would be police, still 265 horse. Sure its JQ?

Rich,
I would get rid of the original 2 bbl intake (if still there) and rebuild it. (Yes, I said 2 bbl! The only BBC that had one!) It has 2 bolt mains, cast crank, and 9.5 to 1 compression.
Would make a nice pump gas street engine with a better cam and induction system.

Virgil,

He's definately rebuilding and going with an better cam and maniflod carb set up. So the heads are ok I assume - just concerend on sinking money into the heads if they are not worth it. I would think a little bit bigger on the valves and some pocket porting would also enhance the performance on those heads, but then the dollars add up there.

Rich,
I would have him check the CC's of the heads, as I think they are closer to 112cc instead of 122cc. Most heads of 69 were 100cc closed chambers and these are a semi open chamber,if I'm not mistaken.
I rebuilt one of these engines about 10 years ago for a friend, and it is still going strong. 2bbl and all.
If the friend is just doing a mild street build up, I would gasket match maybe, and if he goes to hardened seats, change to the bigger valves. Seat prices are the same. (Or at my machine shop anyways!)
