I found the VIN stamp on my block located stamped above the oil filter area, in the grainy area of the side of the block vertically. Is this where it's supposed to be on a block dated I 28 9? BTW, the date code casting was on the back of the block near the casting number.

Thanks,
Keith

Keith,

Yes that would be the correct location for that year block. I looked at few early built 70 Chevelles with the number there as well. I believe 70 they started stamping more on the front pad.

Seems like the changes on moving the vin to the front pad started after 12/69, but then again, the date code casting prior to 1/70 was supposed to be on the side between oil pan and freeze plug. My date casting is in the back near the block casting number. This is an early '70 Chevelle with a build date of 10/11/69. I have seen early origional blocks with the partial VIN on the pad. Would it be correct also to have the VIN on the pad instead of the side of the block? This has been baffling me.

Thanks,
Keith

Keith,

Not sure - hope someone else chimes in here on that - my 70 is a Jan 7th block and the Vin is on the pad. I looked at an early 70 a few years back when in the purchasing mode, it had the vin by the oil filter - if I recall it was in a rough area - difficult to read but was there.

Thks

Ive had about 10 70 402/454 blocks and some were on front pad others were above oil filter. I sold 2 402's outta chevelles both with J/K casting dates both vin's above oil filter, ones I still have that I know dates are 69 427 #512 block casting date A-4-9 vin above filter, 70 512 E-4-70 vin above oil filter all the oher 70 blocks I have a CE blocks.

So I guess it's either/or, and there is no "cut-off" date for vin stamping above oil filter, or on pad. One block sitting next to the other block on the same day, in the same plant could have a VIN stamp on the pad, and the other above the oil filter, depending on who stamped it, and where they felt like stamping it. Do I assume correctly?

It might have varied by assembly plants? I have a 70 396/402 built at Kansas city 12/30/69 it is stamped on the front pad where the engine assembly date is, where was your car built at? Marty

Tonawanda assembly plant.

My Chevelle was built in Van Nuys. Where did that plant stamp the VIN on the block? Was it on the pad, or above the oil filter?

Thanks,
Keith

Keith,

My '70 was built 6 days after yours and it has the VIN near the oil filter area and not on the pad near the alternator. It is a Van Nuys built car.

Thanks Al. From what I've heard most Camaros have the stamping on the _pad_ that were built at Van Nuys. Anyone else have a 70 that would like to confirm this, or anyone who has a VIN stamp on the pad with the same general build date? This is very important research for me.

Thanks,
Keith

It seems a concensus so far that Van Nuys Chevelles built in October had VIN stampings above the oil filter area and not on the front pad. Everyone agree?
