: Stud Griddle?? How Tall Lift Do You Have To Have One?
jpextreme Mar 5th, 09, 7:48 AM I am building a 496 with 049 heads and the cam I was going to use is XR286. 248/252 660/660 . My engine builder told me I would have to run a stud griddle for that lift. If I were to back done, what cam could I use and not use a griddle?
My issue is I have air cond on my 71 chevelle and with a taller valve cover my air cond bracket wouldnt fit and I would hit the brake booster. Thanks JOHN
bracketchev1221 Mar 5th, 09, 9:17 AM I don't think you need one for that cam. Unless you plan on high spring pressures or high rpm I wouldn't use it. However, that is an issue up to your engine builder to make the call. It's his product and if something happens based on your call he won't be happy. But we ran a .680/.680 lift roller in my father's 427 that was shifted at 7500 and crossed at 8000 without a stud girdle.
onovakind67 Mar 5th, 09, 11:53 AM Does George Foreman make one that will work?
wildman926 Mar 5th, 09, 1:19 PM It won't hurt, and it is not a must have. Just a little more insurance if you don't set the jam nut correctly on the lock nut and you start getting more lash due to lick nut loosening, stud flexing, etc.
BillsCamino Mar 5th, 09, 1:48 PM Girdle not needed at that lift. :noway: Just use a quality rocker stud.
Tom Mobley Mar 5th, 09, 5:03 PM between the stud griddle and lick nuts this thread is a little strange. :)
jpextreme Mar 6th, 09, 8:06 AM These are cast 049 heads and he told me for this solid roller cam would have to use decent spring pressure and was concerned of the pressure on the stud. I wont go over 6500 rpms. Is he being overly cautious? JP
highdesert56 Mar 6th, 09, 10:50 PM good song names there. I acutally lol'd at that one Tom.

As for the Stud Girdle. It is cheap ins. But not required with your plans....

=
If that is the shelf cam you might want to have a little talk with your engine builder on the merits of using "decent spring pressure" on that cam
Unless custom ordered it is on a cast core,,
Not a combination I would recommend ;)
jpextreme Mar 10th, 09, 10:28 PM Can you go into more detail about not using this set up? OK I get it girdle not griddle and Foreman does make it.
