Car is a 1972 Chevelle SS 402 motor looks like it has the orignal engine I could only see the last #'s on the engine pad 4907(alt in the way) zero rust inside all orignal except the tops of the seat covers they have been redone with a oddball fabric. nice paint could be orginal. 12 bolt rear turbo 400. I dont know anything about 72's the guy is asking 10,500 is this a good price if everything checks out?

Thanks for any help

Sounds like a deal to me. The U in the vin indicates the car came with a 402. If it is as rust free and original as it sounds I'd grab it.

Steve has a couple of items turned around. The 15635 on the body number plate (trim tag) is the Fisher Body unit number and is assigned by GM when the body is ordered to be made by Fisher. The 524907 on the VIN is the production sequence number starting at 500001 for 1972 Chevelles - meaning the 24,907th Chevelle (all models) off the Arlington line for the model year 1972. This is the number that should match the stamping on the engine for a 'numbers matching' car. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

The 142 after the assembly date on the trim tag is an internal tracking number found on the build sheet.

A '72 SS could come with the functional Cowl Induction hood if ordered with the 402 or 454 engine.

In '71, only the SS-454 could be ordered with Cowl Induction.

In '70, the SS-396 or SS-454 could be ordered with Cowl Induction.

i bought a 72 chevelle malibu for $1500. it super clean inside, only like 2 little tares in the drivers seat, a litte bit of rust on the drivers side quater pannel, runs really strong, dosent smoke, suspension is good, no major oils leaks. all in all a awsome first car for a 19 teen yr old (yea i kno, but my parents wouldnt help me at all and i didnt want a job while in school) i was checkin out my vin number and i kno what all of it means except one part where it was made. mine has a "L" in it i kno the "A" was for arlington but thats it. i was checkin my numbers and the all match. except the only thing was that he put on a edelbrock performer intake and a carter carb on it. so if ne one kno's what the "L" means that would be great, thanks

Dino;

I'm in Albq. too, so if you are thinking of buying this car and are going to look at it, send me an e-mail if you'd like a second set of eyes.
