A guy asked me to help him with a seat code he couldn't find anywhere. Trim tag says 796-B and it's Kansas built. My GM parts book doesn't list a 796 code for 68 and the decoder program available here on TC doesn't list it either. On top of everything else, the seats are red buckets which also do not show as being available in '68; red bench-yes, buckets-no.
Anyone have ideas? I'm trying to get a picture of the trim tag (he emailed me what it said) and he says he has the POP that he's going to check as well.
I'll have the picture of the interior he sent me up on my site...right after dinner. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Even Buick and Olds used a six digit code, first three were Chevrolet then a dash, then the second three for Buick or Olds codes like 766-168. This is reported to be 796-B which is the way Kansas cars denoted bucket seats. There is no 796 code that I can find for 68, no red buckets, yet I have a picture (http://www.chevellestuff.com/68velle/interiors/796_undocumented_red_buckets.jpg) and it appears to be a Chevelle seat. Got me.

But, I have a photo of the interior (http://www.chevellestuff.com/68velle/interiors/796_undocumented_red_buckets.jpg), a photo of the POP (note 'D' in upper left corner) (http://www.chevellestuff.com/68velle/tags/pop_kan04a.jpg), and a photo of the body number plate (http://www.chevellestuff.com/68velle/tags/tt_kan04.jpg).

Hi Dale:
My GM Canada master parts catalogue lists 796 (but with option code C) for Red, A51 buckets. Available for 138-36, 138-67, 135/136-67, & 135/136-37
Perhaps this was originally intended for export to Canada? It is not listed as US import only though...
Hope that helps a little bit.

I had a 68 that came with red buckets and it had a 796 code. It was sold brand new in Tennessee. I put a bench seat in it because I liked a bench better.
