: '70 SS unique
Texas70 Mar 3rd, 09, 1:55 PM A co-worker is looking at a car in Michigan to have it shipped here to Houston. Here is the description:
'70 SS special order for the original and current owner who was a GM employee. The car is ALL ORIGINAL, numbers matching Chevelle SS convertible. It has 396 tags on the fenders but was equipped with a 427. It has a 411 posi, T-400, console shifter, cowl induction, etc......
It was also equipped with squirters to the rear wheels for traction in snow/ice. Also has squirters to the headlights and turn blinker indicators on the fenders. Apparently all original factory assembled for this employee. The car has 47k orig miles. It is red w/ black stripes (orig paint)
How much is this one of a kind worth?
What proof does the seller have to document the 427? VERY RARE car if indeed he has proof. I would venture to say 1 of 1. Is the VIN stamped on the engine?
1972convss454 Mar 3rd, 09, 2:44 PM I'm no expert but if it is what you have described and he has documentation to back it up I would say a pretty penny. Definitely a one of a kind. Some of those options I think were in the assembly manual but never made it to production cars. I would say $80K+.
What are they asking???
TCSS1970 Mar 3rd, 09, 3:10 PM I could almost imaging a fast one being pulled by GM workers and would almost be surprised if it didn't happen but would doubt it could be documented. You order your car and get your buddies to slip the 427 in the plant in place of the 396. But if you document it somebody gets in trouble.
kettbo Mar 3rd, 09, 3:19 PM Lets see the documentation and the stampings!
I know there are lots of stories about underhanded dealings. One involved a GM engineer who wanted a hi-pref SBC in his A/C Corvette....1970-71 time frame. It got made apparently. When pulled exited the assy line for testing, the QC guy noted the oil pressure was too high so he flagged it....investigation conducted as to the high pressure, hi-perf engine found in there.....IIRC, the engineer was fired and others got into trouble. Thing was, a year or two later in 72, you could get the LT-1 solid lifter engine in a Vette with A/C.
The 427 in a 70? 427 was not a 1970 model engine....though the factory continued to make some for warranty/over the counter purchases no doubt.
Headlight squirters and de-icer/traction compound squirters were available on some models, not sure if Chevelle...no time to research this trivia....for sure, Camaro option IIRC
dreis454 Mar 3rd, 09, 3:26 PM Sounds like a rare car with all the options but I call major BS on the 427.
oldtimebaseballfan Mar 3rd, 09, 3:33 PM John, ask the co-worker which 427 it has. Also, since the original owner still has it, he should have some documentation. Ask him for it and the POP and what is the casting #s on the block.
With unobtainable and unique features, if it were legit with a high perf. 427 and documentation, I'd say it could be well over the 80k stated above.
depley Mar 3rd, 09, 5:00 PM If this guy could produce a documented 427 1970 Chevelle SS with the options above I would guess that it would be worth upwards of $200K. Especially an all original 47K miles survivor in excellent condition.
SS4Real Mar 3rd, 09, 5:18 PM 4:11 posi?
Bunz-T Mar 3rd, 09, 5:25 PM There are a lot of questions to be answered but the most glaring is " Why have we not heard of this car before?" I cannot believe only one person on this earth knows of this "rare" car and kept it a secret from every other human being for 39 years. And for the average person to get his hands on it from the original owner.........well I too would like to see the proof.
bookmaker19 Mar 3rd, 09, 7:25 PM Why not have someone in Michigan check it out?? Where is it-Im in central Michigan/ Southeastern lower, I would take a few guys I know and check it out. If intrested PM me to discuss. Norman:thumbsup:

Audies71Malibu Mar 3rd, 09, 7:43 PM Sounds too good to be true. Something like this could be worth a LOT of money. I wouldn't tell anyone about it until I had it parked in my garage. :)
Texas70 Mar 3rd, 09, 9:17 PM I know. It does sound too good to be true. The car is being shipped now and should be here in a few weeks (many stops between here and there apparently). I will follow up with you all when he gets the car and sees what documentation, POP and anything else he can verify. I will also ask him if I can take pics and I will post them for you.
He did have a knowledgable friend check it out before the purchase.............
More to come...
Thanks y'all
1972convss454 Mar 3rd, 09, 11:10 PM Definitely keep us posted!!!
DaleM Mar 3rd, 09, 11:20 PM 4:11 posi?I ask this all the time. the only 4.11 gear set I've seen is from Richmond and they are race-only gear sets; 4.11 are old Chevrolet Hotchkiss (55-64) and Ford 9" gears but 4.11 seems to roll-off-the-tongue easier than 4.10 I suppose.
BlueSS454 Mar 3rd, 09, 11:39 PM I knew Dale would clear that one up. 4.11 was NEVER an offered gear ratio and a GM employee of the time should know that.
novadude Mar 4th, 09, 7:16 PM If you ask me, there is no way the 427 could have ever made it into a '70 Chevelle at the factory. Production plants weren't installing 427s in anything in the 1970 model year. It would practically take an act of congress for a "CE" engine to make it into the build sequence at a production plant.
Also... were headlight squirters and winter "tire squirters" available in 1970? I thought that was a 1969 deal.

Corvettes were still being built into November of 1969, as well as Camaros. Both could be had with the 427.....BUT....you'd have to be pretty high up in GM to get someone to ship an engine from Tonawanda to a Chevelle assembly plant to be put in your own car. It would not be a CE engine. I could just hear the phone calls being made as someone was trying to push this one through.....:noway:
I do believe headlight washers and traction compound were only available part of the year for 69 even....
61vettedad Mar 11th, 09, 8:41 PM can you give us an update? :beers:
1970SS Mar 11th, 09, 9:35 PM I want to see the documentation on this car. I am doubtful on the 427 but it is possible I suppose. I worked for GM in the early 90's in the Chevrolet Hobby Shop and if you were an exec at GM even then you could get things that were never offered to the public. I also worked for a guy in college that had major engineering involvement with GM in the 60's and 70's and he told me you could have about anything built that you wanted back then if you knew the right people within Chevrolet and he worked closely with Vince Piggins. He had a 1967 L88 Vette (1 of 21) and a 65 Z-16 that he still owns today. He drove the Z-16 as his everyday car until it had 60K on the clock and then he parked it in his shop where it has set ever since. It is a red car and still has the window sticker in the window. It had about 3 inches of dust on it and still had the original red line tires that were all flat. It has been years since I have seen it but I know he still has it and it is still probably sitting in the same spot.
clean7t Mar 11th, 09, 11:48 PM I would have loved to check this thing out. Sounds a little strange to me.
1972convss454 Mar 16th, 09, 2:06 PM Well, just checking to see if the Prize Has Arrived???
