13637 - V8 Malibu sport coupe
R ~ Arlington, Tx assembly plant
37180 ~ Fisher Body unit number
718 ~ Lt. Sandalwood Rondel Cloth or Ant. Lt. Sandalwood Coated Fabric - bench seat
53 11 ~ Placer Gold (53-lower), Antique White (11-upper) two tone paint.
03B ~ March, 2nd week
029 ~ unknown but probably a tracking number that appears on the build sheet as well.

You wouldn't have a clear picture of the tag by chance...and...a picture of the car if it has the original paint scheme? Not too often you see a two-tone painted 71. I'd like to add the data to my ChevelleStuff web site - see sig block for more 64-72 decoding info.

Placer Gold is an uncommon color, one of the members of the Md Chevelle Club has a Placer Gold 71 SS that he had repainted and had the painter add some Pearl to the paint, it looks awesome. I am an advocate of painting the orignal color, but it is your car.

Here's a hint as to how it "might" look. The color's not exact (Granada Gold), but it'll give you an idea anyways...

Hmmmm,

Then what color is this? Think this is paint code 53 (Place Gold) that is displayed in this link on the 454 SS shown there. If I remember right it is the same color that came out on the Vettes in '69 (?) called WarBonnet Yellow or something to that effect.

Or is that code 52 that is shown there in the add?

Here's a 71 Placer Gold Chevelle (http://www.chevellestuff.com/71velle/gallery/53_placer_gold.jpg) - just imagine it with a white top. Here's a 71 Placer Gold Elky (http://www.chevellestuff.com/71elky/gallery/53_placer_gold.jpg) that's a nicer paint job.

nitpicking

1st car is a 1972, or at least has 1972 parking lights on it.

Dale,

I was like you. I always thought the Placer Gold color was as you show in the pictures. But those chip examples that are on this site and the one referenced by elky show a different, more brown color than the sort of burnished brassier color.

Have these chip colors darkened with age? That sunflower yellow was REALLY yeller if I remember correctly.
