OK my sister wants to drive my chevelle but I dont know if I want her to or not. My car has no power steering and is a manual valve body so she has to shift. She is a good driver but I'm not sure if she is strong enough. I told her to give me a flex and her is what she gave, well should I let her drive?

If I were 20 I'd be after your sister (you can tell her that too)! Let her have a go.
I'd supervise though...

My sis just came in here to check out what you guys were saying and when I showed her the picture, she yells "OH MY GOD I MY ARMPITS ARE HAIRY" and she starts flipping out. I told her there not hairy there just stubbly, which aint as bad. See what I have to live with

I'd tell her to pound sand personally. No one drives my car other than me. I'm bitter that way though, because I've had two of my favorite cars totalled off by buddies who knew how to drive, never again!!! My old lady ain't even gonna drive my Cuda ( yes I said the Mopar word here) when it's done.

Disclaimer. I'm still a devout Chevy guy but I just couldn't pass up such a clean, rust free project. ;)

Whats the harm in letting her drive it in a controlled location like an empty parking lot with you riding along? I say at least give her a chance.

My Brother wants to drive mine too, I told him "no" since I know he does not have the money to help out if something was to happen. I love him but the "I am sorry" he would say won't repair it. I am one that looks for the worst case in everything. Bad habit I guess. If it gets wrecked it will be by me "only"

Depends how mature and responsible she is... I'd have no problem letting anyone in my family drive mine, but there's an awful lot of people I wouldn't even consider giving the chance.

There is a story that goes with that. After she had been hitting the gym for a month she challenged me to an armwrestling match on her birthday, so I guess she was feeling lucky. So we started and just to give her a present I let her take me 3/4 the way down and then I just slowly brought her arm down. Dont get me wrong she is strong but i dont know if i trust her with the car. I showed her who was boss though.

ya gotta let her drive as long as your in the car with her to suppervise, i let my new girlfreind drive my corvette to the local car show, i needed a driver, i had the impala, son had the gsx, his buddy had the chevelle. the vette is an automatic the shift indicator says 123 (no D) she didnt know where to put the shifter and drove it 5 miles down the highway at 50 mph, IN FIRST GEAR. 25 years of driven and you would think she could have figured that out, so go with her. even after that i let her drive the gsx to the next show

Aw geez let her drive it. The first 4 speed car I ever drove was my brother's 1968 SS396. This was in 1971. It is something I will always remember and was a special point in the relationship with my oldest brother. He pulled over, looks at me and says "Time to learn how to drive a stick!". Great memories man great memories.
Let her do it.

I'm going to go on the side of caution and say no. If ANYTHING happens, her fault or not, you're going to be angry, and saying " If only I was driving ".

Whats the harm???
Years ago, when I was 18, I let a good friend drive my Chevelle in the high school parking lot (11 PM, only one other car in the lot)... He was driving pretty slow, going up and down the lot. After his 2nd or third pass, he got to the end, and began turning around... Manual steering, so it didn't return to center as quickly as with Power steering, and he was now facing the only other car, his other friends '70 GTO... He ended up panicking, hitting the gas instead of the brake, and T-boned the GTO... Totalled the GTO, and my Chevelle needed an entire front clip...

But actually, I say, let your sister drive... Manual steering and a manual valve body? Give her credit... My mother learned to drive with a 4-speed and manual steering (1959 Corvette)... Its not as hard as it sounds...

Let her drive it, you in the passenger seat. My son drives mine, my wife doesn't want to. First stick shift I drove was my sister's boyfriend's car. '64 Plymouth Fury 426 wedge 4 spd. He offered and taught me how to drive a stick shift.

Remember, she'll owe you one if you let her.

A few years ago I let my sister drive the gold 65 I had because her car was broke down. It was only for one day so she could get to work. I was pretty nervous till she brought it back safe and sound. She complained about the manual brakes, no A/C, no power windows and no cup holder for her coffee. Hey, it got you there didn't it?

I think you guys who say no under any circumstances are pretty selfish. I'm not saying let anyone drive it. But if a person proves to be responsible ,and a good driver. Why not?

In the end it is only a car. And cars are built to be driven.

I wouldn't trust my friends to drive my cars, most of my family doesn't really care about old cars. If I had a child or significant other that could handle it and proved to be responsible I wouldn't see any harm in letting them take it out for a spin.

If something happened I would probably be livid. But if it proved not to be their fault it wouldn't be directed at them, it would be torwards the other person.

I let a close friend of mine drive my tunnel-rammed small block 71 Malibu back in high school. It came back with the imprint of a telephone pole in the passenger quarter panel... :noway: :noway:

Depley, that brings me back too, except my brothers car was a 442.
I say let her drive it with you in the car for starters. If she's a responsable enough driver let her use it once in a while.

1. Because bad things can happen to good drivers. Those of us with frame off restorations likely have over 1000 hrs of our own time and countless $$ making the car as perfect as we can afford. You put this kind of time and money out, and I'll bet you'd change your tune real quick.

2. And damage is still damage. It's not going to look any better because whomever was driving my car wasn't at fault.

We shall see I guess. I just can't see my oppinion changing. I'm not going to horde the cars all for myself. If I've got family that shares the interest I probably wouldn't mind letting them drive once and a while.

I guess we will agree to disagree.

Go to a quiet neighborhood and give her stick shift 101 lessons. Then after she gets the hang of shifting thru the gears go to low traffic streets (early Saturday morning). I would always go of the ride though. I did this for my 15 year old nephew last summer while visisting us from Florida. He had never driven a manual transmission before and was thrilled to learn on a muscle car. He posted it on "Youtube" As a trade off he has been doing my computer geek stuff since he was 8.
