1968 Chevelle Malibu
307 stock engine with a/c
powerglide tranny

ok so im only 19 and have the basic's when it comes to mechanics. but i have a 68 chevelle with a/c, the problem is that the water pump waas changed out to a bigger water pump, by my uncle and the a/c bracket was takin off and the a/c compresser was tied off to the finder using some rope. so what would it take for me beside getting smaller water pump and a new a/c bracket. as far as chargeing the a/c my dad has a friend at his work that does a/c. but and newer models. thanks for your help

Obviously the first thing to do is get the necessary hardware to remount the compressor.
If the system has been out of service for a long time, there will be a good bit of prep to make it work right and be reliable. It may be minor, but the price can escalate quickly if the system has been open to air for a while.
Budget about $600 to fix the AC and be happy if/when it costs less. That's a pretty realistic figure.

It will need a new accumulator and likely a new expansion valve. The POA valve might be ok, but it will need to be tested to be sure.

A close inspection of the hoses will reveal any physical damage, but remember, those hoses are 40+ years old. Look for corrosion on the metal lines and condenser.

If the compressor hub turns freely with no binding and the pulley bearing is ok the compressor is probably good. You will need to replace the shaft seal.

The big issue would be the evaporator core in the dash. They often corrode if the system has been empty for a long time and has absorbed moisture. A pressure test will determine if it is damaged. A replacement core is about $3-400 by itself.

To determine the work needed, you will have to disassemble and inspect everything under the hood. If you are new to AC systems, I would suggest spending some time at www.autoacforum.com . It's an excellent resource for DIY AC repair. Any posts mentioning "POA" or "A6 compressor" will be particularly relevant to your system.

Good Luck
