Don't now if this is the right forum, but.....
I have been having a smoking problem with my 396. I know there is a spot in one cylinder that looks like acid ate inot it. Was holping it was below the oil ring. I had the whole top end redone(I know, while ti was out I should have done the complete...too anxious). But now it smokes pretty good, especially if I get on it. It runs great. But smoke comes out when I punch it. I have an x pipe, so it's hard to determine which side, if not both, is worse. Someone was following me and said the smoke was NOT blue? One thing I haven't done is clean out the gas tank. It has been sitting for a long time before I got the car. Been putting good gas in it and it runs good, but could residue in the tank cause the smoke??? I am about ready to pull the motor again and do the bottom end, but if it could be something else???? Any sugestions?????

If it is not blue smoke I am assuming black? If so that is a sure sign of a rich burning fuel problem. I would wait on such drastic action as pulling the motor.

My be and ignition or carb related problem.

Does it do it ALL the time, just at start up, under heavy acceleration, cruising ??????

OK, I see that you said it smokes bad "when you punch it"

If it is black smoke I would look hard at the carb, first. Then check for fouled plugs and or cap and rotor.

White smoke could mean a bad shift module if the car is an automatic.

It's a 4 speed. I really don;t feel it's fuel. The smoke is more on the blue side. I am going tocheck plugs and compression this weekend. Then I should know what's up.

ctrain,
I am going to move this over to engines and see if anyone else wants to jump in.
Usually, smoke when under load means rings, but you never know. Very hard to even take a guess without seeing the patient.
