: Holley carb trouble, please help!

Good afternoon,

This is in reference to a "standard" Holley 4160 600 CFM vacuum secondary carbueretor (0-1850s). The throttle plate itself seems to be sticking. Luckily it's sticks in the closed position and the car can still idle. Basically, it takes a good stab at the pedal to break it free. I tried lubricating the carb linkage around the throttle, but this doesn't help much. I am afraid that the throttle cable is going to snap from too much stress. The carb is less than 5 years old, with only about 4500 miles on it. Looking back, this problem seems to be getting worse over time, especially in the winter. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

First place to trouble shoot is figure out if it's the carb or the linkage/cable by disconnecting the linkage. If the carb revs free the problem is the cable/linkage or pedal assembly.

I will check again this evening and get back to you, thanks!

Look closely inside the carb when moving the throttle blades. It could be the gasket or intake blocking the blades from moving freely. Try taking the carb off the car and see if the problem goes away.

I loosened the bolts that mount the carb to the intake and retorqued them to 12 ft/lb. It seems to be OK now, but I am going to let it sit overnight and try it when it's coldest out. Maybe something is sticky around the throttle blades. I'll write back when I check it out this evening.

Thanks!

On some throttle cables, there is a plactic sleeve on the carb end of the cable. The sleeve has a sort of bell mouth flare on the end of it. This allows for the cable to retract (throttle applied). I have seen the cable bind right at the area of the cable mount on the carb. Have some one mash the pedal while watching this area.
