Hello members...

Building a 454...

Want a forged crank w/ 4 inch stroke...

L2349 .030 pistons.

049 oval port open chamber stock heads (2.08/1.73)

Weiand 8005 action plus intake.

Camshaft still unpurchased BUT want something around 224/234 .500/.550...

I am thinking an 850 Double pumper Holley. Is this to much?

Whats better vacuum secondaries or mechanical?

What should I look for?

What do you guys recommend?

Thanks again...

are you going to be driving it on the street?

if so, I'd avoid a traditional Holley double pumper as they are pig rich in the transition circuit which is where it will spend most of it's time. this is not affected much by the idle mix screws, main jets or power valve. It controlled by drilled holes in the metering block. Look at a carb originally designed for street use, maybe an 870 Holley Street Avenger.

I find the 870 Street Avenger rich also for a fairly stock 454. I have had great luck with the 770 Street Avenger, they work quite well with automatics.

It will just be going to car shows etc...

I also dont think it will get 1000 miles a year...

I just want the engine to run like I stole it and am not caring about streetability...

750 or 780 VS is all you need...remember the factory used the 780 on all the solid lifter hi=po motors for years...very versatile carb...Eric Jackson can build you a nice one. On those heads...why not put in the 2.19/1.88 valves...you want it to really go...easy upgrade and with a little porting...you will be very happy.

Just some thoughts...wilma
