: Burning rubber smell

Hi, today I got my 307/350 1970 Malibu (recently bought) on the street; everything was going fine, except for the fact that I could smell burning rubber every time I floored the accelerator pedal. What's wrong? The worst thing for me at this time would be a transmission issue...

Thanks in advance

Claudio

if it only happens under hard acceleration, i would suspect transmission. Hopefully you are not burning anything electrical. Start by checking under the hood for anything that might be touching your exhaust manifold or headers.

take a look under the car at the exhaust system
make sure there are no exhaust hangers that have some of the rubber touching the pipe
how new is the exhaust system?

Onick: It does happen only under hard acceleration. Time for a tranny rebuild? Never drove an automatic before (they aren't common over here), so I couldn't tell how good or bad the transmission is. By the way, there is no smell under the hood.

Tom: I'm afraid the exhaust system is the original, with some repairs. I got the muffler fixed just today, it had a big hole!

Thanks for your replies

Maybe the back tires are spinning yeah, that is a very common problem in Chevys, especially Chevelles. tongue.gif :D smile.gif

My first thought was belts too. Higher RPM + Loose or worn belts = burning rubber smell, and not always squealing either.

How did you suspect transmission with burning rubber smell????

Changed and tightened belts, no more smell!!
I did suspect transmission because of my ignorance graemlins/sad.gif smile.gif
Thanks to everyone!

By the way, how is the sportfishing down in Chile?

I'm not a sportfishing fan, but I would recomend my country for that purpose. South of Chile is plenty of fishing lodges, being november-december (trout) and march-april (salmon) the best time for fishing (I've heard). Fishermen from USA are abundant also... smile.gif

Thanks to everyone! Read the post's first. He found the problem and it wasn't the clutch
