: What is this problem? Leaking
oregonchevelle Oct 15th, 04, 2:56 AM I have a leak of either oil or transmission gear oil. The transmission isa standard richmond 4 speed. The leak appears to be where the starter meets in with the flywheel. At least that is where it drips from, off the starter. It also drips from the scatter housing where it meets up to the engine and flywheel area. What do you think is the problem? Also what course of action do I need to take. I noticed that the oil that goes onto the headers ends up sticky.
Thanks Perry
sdtsdt Oct 15th, 04, 10:50 AM Start by checking things like oil pressure switch on back of intake, valve cover gasket, oil leaking from rear of intake ...Look for signs of oil working it's way down bellhousing ...The intake would be a bit more involved to correct, but a valve cover or pressure switch would be a minor repair ...
oregonchevelle+ Oct 15th, 04, 11:41 AM All of those places look to be fine. The oil or gear oil is pretty much just dripping from the starter and scatter housing. Of course it ends up everywhere under there but the bigggest part looks to be coming from those two spots. Could it be transmission lube in those spots? 4 speed NOT an automatic?
Thanks for any help

Steve S Oct 15th, 04, 1:42 PM Sounds like engine rear seal or transmission front seal
oregonchevelle+ Oct 15th, 04, 4:23 PM I am suposed to go racing tonight. Can I make this last night and then tear it down? Should I say forget it.
etracer Oct 17th, 04, 9:26 PM What does the oil it drips smell like-If it is real smelly it is probably the trans gear fluid! I would not race until fixing the problem-Could be a cheap fix now but not latter!
oregonchevelle+ Oct 20th, 04, 7:10 PM I went ahead and ran last friday and it went fine, I guess? I am finding small amounts of oil all over now though. Some on the fuel pump, some on the timing chain cover etc. to go along with the other leaks. I am thinking it may be do for pull and send to the shop.
LeoP Oct 20th, 04, 7:22 PM before you pull it, check to see if it is coming from a bolt hole in front of the fuel pump. If the bolt hole is empty, it will leak and at high rpm it will push oil out and the fan will blow it everywhere.
oregonchevelle Oct 21st, 04, 2:08 AM Nope that bolt is in there fine, no leak around there at all. Thanks for the idea though.
Xtreme70SS396 Oct 21st, 04, 1:31 PM Mine used to leak there also, it was from the rear valve cover, at the corner. Run a clean paper napkin round the back of your valve cover and see if it shows anything wet.
oregonchevelle+ Oct 21st, 04, 3:41 PM OK Xtreme I will try it tonight when I get home from work.
oregonchevelle+ Oct 22nd, 04, 3:46 PM Well not the valve cover. Looks like maybe it is coming form the intake near the distributor? Not sure though, I am thinking maybe the front and rear seals are bad.
ACLineman Oct 23rd, 04, 1:39 PM I have not noticed anyone suggesting to check the fluid level of both the transmission and the engine.
Keep an eye on it and you'll no doubt find out which is leaking.Easy enough???
