68bye Feb 25th, 09, 10:43 PM The first Chevelles I ever bought were a pair of 64's for $800. (circa 1987) One of them ran and drove nice! The other had a better body. I miss that car. I used the one that ran for parts. Maybe after all my projects are closer to usable (notice I didn't say "done") I'll look for another one. 'Love to see the first years. These all look great guys! Keep 'em coming.

L79Man Mar 5th, 09, 8:44 PM Who has the best dual snorkle reproduction?
Les,
I don't really know who has the best as I have never tried to research and purchase one. Rich may know whose is best. I have seen the one that OPGI carries and it looked like decent quality--good chrome, the right design, bends and tack welds. One thing I noticed is it did not have the nipple in the base to connect the choke heater tubing. It did have the crankcase vent tube, though.

I'd pretty much agree with all those comments. I've never really looked them over that well as my original is very nice and haven't had a need to look at getting another.
I will add that I don't think more than one company actually manufactures the reproductions. I'd venture a strong guess that the one OPGI sells and the one any other vendor sells are made by the same manufacturer. Of those I've seen, the chrome is nice but the stamping isn't quite as crisp as a true GM original, but then this can be said of almost ANY reproduction piece made of stamped metal.

Hi Frank
I have just started to get into this car. I recently got full quarters, and trunk metal. Instead of borrowing a welder this time I bought a mig. Last weekend I did some very minor patching that needed to be done on the floor. The trunk is actually in pretty solid shape, but it's all banged up. I have no deadline on this car. I set myself a deadline on the red car of one year. I did ALL the work myself. It was quite a marathon, but it was done in one year. I am going to take my time on this car. I am taking pictures as I go, and will post some soon.

The photo of your fender breaks my heart.
wills65 Mar 11th, 09, 4:26 PM No problem! I love seeing these years, as I have been going to my local cruise-ins and car shows for at least 10 years and I have only seen 3 '64-'65s in person.
Yeah, if the picture breaks your heart, you can only imagine what I felt when it happened. All is well though as she will hopefully be leaving for the body/paint shop on Monday or Tuesday. Keep 'em comin' guys!

What are those wheels on the front? They are sharp!
raugusti Apr 1st, 09, 4:00 PM What are those wheels on the front? They are sharp!
Given the information provided by a forum member, they are '73/'74 Turbine 1 wheels that came on SS Chevelles and as optional on others. I managed to find the center cap locally. There is only the one on that corner, the wheels on the other side are different and are studded snow tires! :noway:

highlandlake Apr 5th, 09, 6:30 PM Today I went and fetched mine from where I store it for the winter. I was so happy....the temperature was almost 60 degrees. (It's been a long, long winter here) I was fully prepared to have to charge the battery, but I hooked up the + and - terminals and gave it a crank. It was still charged!! Whoo hoo. Of course I unhooked the ignition lead first to let it turn over and coat the internals with oil. I popped the lead back on and it fired right up. I use a manual choke hooked to the forward carburetor so it ran on only three cylinders for the first 15 seconds or so then carb #2 started to wake up. It was idling on it's own (with choke on) after another 30 seconds. The car was still quite cold so I expect this.
The tires only needed 3-5 psi each so that was good news too. I let it warm up and drove it home. It ran great - I had put plain old Stabil in the gas and was worried that the ethanol mix was going to cause issues. None noticed yet.
So I changed the oil today and took this picture before it went back in the garage.
As you can see, we still have plenty of snow around and lots of sloppy melting puddles even on a dry day. I figure in about two weeks the roads will be clear enough to start cruising again.
The lake here (Highland Lake) still is covered in ice. So until open water fishing begins I'll entertain myself dubbing around cleaning out the piles of old parts I have kicking around.
But it sure felt good firing up the car today!
fridgeguy Apr 5th, 09, 6:39 PM There's nothing better than hearing that engine run after a long winter. I hope to have mine fired up next weekend. Right now the front tires are stuck in 1 inch of ice in my neighbours garage.
Dogfishlake Apr 5th, 09, 8:47 PM I have a 70 and I love it, but with that said, if I can ever get another chevelle, it will DEFINITELY be a 65. That is one sweet shape! Thanks for the pictures.

I special ordered the car in November of 1964 and took delivery in February 1965. L79 Malibu (bench seat 4-speed, tach, etc) I ordered the Malibu instead of the SS because the GM literature said it was 100 lb lighter and I wanted to go fast. :)
The first pictures were taken when the car was two or three months old.

I guess I should start reading more. Your sig answers my questions. And I hear you about the go fast part. My dad ordered his early 1965 with very little in the way of comfort/safety options. It has a heater, 2-speed wiper, front belt retractors, rear speaker and rear seat belts belts but these are about it. No power steering, no power brakes, definitely no AC. About the only things that would make the hard top lighter might be radio and heater delete, the standard wiper motor, bench seat structure instead of 2 buckets, no SS console (that thing weighs about 30 lbs :D) and ???
Anyway, very cool L79 and nice to see another one that didn't get away.
***EDIT*** I forgot about the dash top clock--there's another lb or 2.
