Ok heres what happened. Every morning before school I let the Chevelle warm up. It was warming up this morning and after about 5 minutes the RPMs started to go down until the Chevelle died. I started it up again and it held for about 5 seconds then died again. This is the second time the Chevelle has done this. Please help. :( graemlins/sad.gif

I'd check fuel pressure and filter condition.

Last time that happened to me, I realized I HAD NO GASOLINE!!..

Sounds to me like the choke is just working normally and releasing the fast idle afeter a few minutes. Has the weather in your area recently turned cooler in the AM ? That is when it normally shows up. My S-10 does the same thing when it starts cooling off in the fall.

By the way .. the worst thing you can do to an engine is let it sit and idle for more than a minute or two when cold. Start it up, let the oil pressure come up and drive it. Just drive gently until it warms up completely. Letting it idle allows a bunch of extra fuel to get into the oil and also does not get the engine warm quick enough, causing condensation problems.

I have recently changed the filter and I do have gas. However my choke is not hooked up right now because I cant figure out where to plug in the wires. Its a Holley 750 electric choke. Do you think a carb rebuild would help. Thanks

No im getting fuel to the carbureter. The engine also misses pretty bad at about 1700 to 2000 RPMs. And just about a half hour ago I went out there and the SOB ran fine. Its an on again off again thing!!

Ok second day I missed school because it died halfway there. Worked fine until I got to my friends house then it died. The fuel filter had almost no gas in it. It cant hold the idle. Will start for a second then dies. Before it dies it sounds like its missing because its not getting enough gas. I dont know please help please help please help please help

thats what it sounds like CheZep..... bad pump.... good enough for an idle, but can't keep up under load..... no explaination for why it won't start after being warm though..... :-{

could it be electrical?

Fuel pump, blocked fuel line, clogged fuel filter. You might try putting in a couple gallons of gas to make sure your fuel gauge is reading right.

Pickup sock in tank could be clogged also.

Yep the fuel pump was clogged with varnish. And my gas gauge is incorrect. There was barely any gas in the tank and it says I had a quarter of a tank left. Where can I get a fuel gauge anyway?

More than likely, its not the gauge but rather the sender. You can test the sender with an ohm meter but you will need to drop the tank to do it. If you go to that much trouble, you might as well change it and the sock. my .02 worth

What year is your Chevelle? You don't have to drop all Chevelle tanks to remove the sending unit. smile.gif smile.gif

1972 and I stuck the rebuilt holley on there but it still doesnt pump gas. The cheapie fuel pump I bought did but my neighbor said it wouldnt pump enough gas to the carb to keep it moving??

The cheapie didnt work just tried it. Ive come to the conclusion of a clogged fuel line.

The Chevelle works fine now it was just a bad fuel pump.
