I have read that on the 66 they used lacquer. Not sure about other years.

Most years were lacquer. Lacquer is also much less susceptable to residual waxes, silicones and any other treatments these old timers have had used on them over the years. Fisheyes are hard to deal with on dashes with most other types of paints. Clean the old paint off to the metal and perp. prep seal and hope you got all the nasty stuff off to the metal. The first shot of primer will let you know.

Thanks.
Any idea on what restorers use today to paint them?

Agreed. This is the way to go. I needed to re-paint the steering column and the tops of the doors.

Year One sells the correct lacquer that matched my original dash EXACTLY. I think they offer most original colors.

FYI, SEM paints are lacquer based.

If you have a black interior, just go down to the auto paint store and get some. they still carry it down here.

I just painted the interior on my 64 ss convertible and went to the paint store and had them mix the laquer, the dash is the matted paint and I painted the doors and pillars last night using the 60% gloss acrylic laquer. I have to admit, I'm pleased with the outcome.
