I am curious whether anyone has ever run into this problem. My interior windows and windshield continually haze up with a film similar to what you see on windows of cars whose owners are cigarette smokers. I literally have to clean the windows twice each week because the film is so apparent. I do not have any exhaust leakage nor can I find any openings to the engine compartment. The windshield and rear window appear to have been bonded and sealed with some kind of black window calking which is soft to the touch. I have wondered whether it could be emitting a vapor when it gets hot, although I cannot detect an odor of any kind in the car. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Someplace I read that it is the plastics "outgassing". No pun intended. Lots o us have read about the sticky steering wheels.....same process going on there. The steering wheel rubber material is braking down and that sticky GOOOO is all over the wheel rim. The dash plastic deteriorates ....remember the cars are getting to be 35 years old. I think this plastic deterioration process causes the plastic to get brittle....might be someone can comment on that but most data I read says the film is from the plastic breaking down and emiting gaseous materials.

Do you use any cleaners,conditioners on the interior parts,if so thats probly vaporizing when the int gets hot .

I have the same problem in my '69. I put an entirely new interior in it and the problem started. I too, subscribe to the "out-gassing" theory-and it is still as bad now as when I first did the job four yrs. ago! I leave the windows down a crack while covered in the garage but it doesn't seem to make THAT much difference. Just one more PITA to deal with but what the hell...it's a great car!

About 30 years ago, a friend of mine who, at the time worked for Union Carbide, did, indeed, tell me that the film on the inside of the windshield was called by the release of the polymers in the vinyl seat covers. As the years went on, the problem disappeared until I replaced the interior! So, yes, it IS caused by the release of the polymers...especially pronounced in the summer heat.

I've heard that blue vinyl is the worst for degassing.

Gotta love those chemicals they use..... graemlins/sad.gif Anyhow, my 97 dodge Ram has the same problem with the inside of the windshield. Forget the older, better cars.... that crap is starting with a 7 yr old car already.

Thank you all for your great feedback. Yes, the car has new seat upholstory and carpeting--dark blue. The only cleaning products used is ArmorAll.

if you use armorall that is your problem any thing like armorall on the interior of your car causes it to gas very bad...

sometimes if you have a small leak in the heater coil, the antifreeze will do the same. Jb

Most new cars do it too, especially when they're very new. Once the plastic gets old dry and brittle it won't do it anymore smile.gif

Hi All. I posted this before & never got a reply. I have a smaller 3 chrome spoked green plastic sterring wheel. the plastic has gotten gooey like old tupperware. Is there anything that will clean that off ?
