I got a problem. Its pretty complex, so forgive me if there are a lot of details. Here goes:
I have a 65 chevelle. It has a 350 engine.
The power steering pump does not line up right. the pulley sits slightly behind, so that the belt does not line up on the correct plane. I threw the belt off already. I tried to adjust the pump forward, but it hits the steering box.
another problem is that my heads do not have accessory holes to bolt up the correct bracket. currently my steering pump is mounted to the same bracket that mounts the alternator to the header bolts. (of course there is a lower steering pump bracket that is mounted to the lower engine block.
I have researched steering pumps with remote reservoirs...(March Performance) these seem that they will give me the clearance of the steering box. BUT, the upper adjusting rod bolts to the top bolt of the water pump... the problem with this is that my alternator's adjusting bracket is already taking up that bolt.
Some have told me to move the alternator to the other side. But guess what?.... I have the AC compressor (Vintage Air) on that side!
I could go with the complete serpentine conversion again by March Performance, but this costs nearly $2000!!!!
At this point I am considering a manual steering box set up by Flaming River for around $600. I used to have a 65 Nova with manual rack and pinion.. I kind of liked it, it was very responsive in its handling and it wasn't that hard to park. But Novas are smaller and lighter...
Does anybody have the Flaming River steering box?
Or does anybody have a solution for my power steering pump problem?
