: Just bought a '69 Chevelle for my husband...
qmuscle69 Feb 24th, 09, 1:11 AM He's on deployment right now and I got a great deal from a close family friend. How do I find out what the engine size is? It says 307 on the outside, but the mechanic who checked my car said its probably a 350. (Its a newer engine...not orig. Under 2 years old). Car was re-poed...so we don't have the history really. Runs. Just needs only little minor repairs. Is there somwhere on the engine I can run some #'s?
Oh...and also, it needs new front tires...and size recommendations? I forgot to write down what size the back tires are....
Any advice is greatly appreciated...just tryin to fix her up before the hubby comes home.
bikeron Feb 24th, 09, 1:55 AM You are a wonderful wife! One of the guys can help I'm sure. I'm not an expert on engine numbers. Tire sizes? Make the fronts the same size as the backs if they are stock size (14 or 15 inch).

Let him sort it out himself, I'm quite sure he'll be enjoying the adventures of exploring the youth out of a mysterious car. :)
Will you marry me also?, please?
Chuck Feb 24th, 09, 4:48 AM There will be lots of things for him to sort out when he gets home and that's part of the fun. What you can do in the mean time is to get a set of tires on the car. It would be nice if they all matched. I would guess that you are on a budget, since he is deployed, so leave the technical stuff to him. If the car looks level (height, front to back) I'd just replace the front tires with the size that are on there now, but try to match the back if it's a good brand. The guys in the "Wheels and Tires" Forum can help there.
If you have the money, I'd have the front suspension checked and see if it has ever been updated (ball joints and bushings, shocks). Usually people don't do that and it will make a huge difference in how the car rides and in its safety on the road. That will cost about $1,000 though and he may be able to do it himself and save a bunch of money.
A car to a guy is like buying a dress or buying him a tie. It's so subjective and whatever you do to the car may not be what he would have done and he will be far to polite to change it. I agree with the rest of the guys. He will be soooo thrilled that you would do this for him that he won't care much what it looks like.
By the way, you are the best! Welcome to Team Chevelle. Let us know how we can help. This is one project we'd all like to jump in on.

dpvoiceguy Feb 24th, 09, 5:53 AM First of all, your husband is a great American for his service and my hat's off to him. He also knows how to pick a wife! ;)
You've come to the right place...lots of great people here with all the info you could ever want!
oldtimebaseballfan Feb 24th, 09, 6:52 AM Hello and welcome Q. Thank you and your husband for his military service.
If you look at the front of the engine, behind the alternator, there should be some numbers and letters stamped onto a flat surface, where the cylinder head is on the block. Those are codes that give you lots of info.
Also, on the back of the block where the trans. mounts to the block, at the top, are some casting #s. That will give you information as to what engine block it is.
If you post that information in the Tag Team section, you will receive answers explaining what you bought.
Good luck.

1969 El Camino Dan Feb 24th, 09, 10:32 AM Q,
Welcome!! You Rock! That will be a great car that will make for some great times crusin' when your warrior returns.
Thanks to you and your husband for your sacrifices while serving America.
Do you have a digital camera? If so, send along some pics. We love 'em. Most likely it will be a 350 small block, but you never know. We can tell the difference visually between a small block and a big block, but the finer points require more in-depth checks. On the pass. side of the engine block in front, right below the cyl. head is a flat area that sometimes has stamped numbers that can be used to decode the engine application and size.
What transmission is in the car? Is it a Malibu? 1969 Is my favorite year for Chevelles.
Welcome to Team Chevelle!
BTW, Is your handle "Q" derived from the term "Q ship"? Stealth muscle?

Highway Star Feb 24th, 09, 11:05 AM Q,
Welcome. You are a great lady. I am sure your husband will be just tickled. Tell him thanks for his service from all of us. Thanks to you too!!
Is it going to be a surprise?
I agree with the guys here, as much as you probably want to hook it up for him, he will definitely want to add his own touches to it, and will be ecstatic whether it has new tires on it or not.
Post some pictures if you can, and we'll also try to field any questions you've got.
When does he get to come home?
Lionel-n-Chevelles Feb 24th, 09, 11:46 AM First of all, I would like to thank your husband for his service to our country. That is one outstanding surprise you have waiting for him. Second, do you have a twin that I can marry? Or maybe you could just talk to my wife and try to persuade her that old cars are not a waste of time.
All kidding aside, welcome to the site. This is the best Chevelle website with a lot of knowledgeable people that can answer your questions. Please post some photos when you can. As far as tire size is concerned, 275 60 15 for the rear and 235 60 15 for the front.

bhold69 Mar 1st, 09, 12:49 PM How wonderful are u? Welcome to the site.
joshua page Mar 1st, 09, 2:53 PM Nice looking chevelle, but not a 1969 body, unless converted from a 1969. The chevelle has 68 tail lights and grille. Look at the vin # at bottom of driver side front windshield,Youll see it if you lift up the hood, it will say the year. Also the tires look like 15X8 in back, and 15X7 in the front. As for the engine, you might be better off looking for a cylinder head # to reference what cid, If i think of anything else ill let you know.
