I have a 70 Chevelle SS. When I last put the engine and transmission in the car back in '86 (original engine and transmission), I replaced the engine mounts on both sides and even replaced the part that bolts to the frame. I believe they were both Chevy engine mounts. Not sure about that.

When I went to bolt in the transmission on the cross member, then transmission was off to one side by perhaps the better part off an inch. That made the shifter hit the console and I had to space the handle off to keep it from hitting. It was the same transmission and shifter from before.

Does anyone have any idea why this might have happened? Do the bolt holes into the frame for the motor mounts have that much slop, or do you think I got the wrong mounts?

I'm about to put the engine in again and want to correct the problem. It would be helpful to know what the cause was so I know what to look out for this time.

Thanks, John

Not sure about the slop in the bolt holes, but if I had this problem I'd loosen the motor mounts until the tranny brace was bolted up and straight and then retighten the motor mounts. This'll probably fix ya.

Frame adapters are the same for the 68-72 cars. There is a difference in motor mounts, found that out when I put a rat in the 71. I suspect a engine mount issue, 1 inch is way off and needs to be addressed.

The GM frame brackets and mounts can be installed incorrectly and still bolt up. The ensuing problem will be the offset of the driveline by roughly an 1" or so(exactly what you are describing).
The correct position of the frame brackets on the tower will have the frame bracket actually hangin off the backside of the tower slightly, and not flush with it.

I would check to make sure the frame brackets are offset compared to the towers and then, if so, reverse the motor mounts and all should be good.

I'll check that out, thanks.
