I have a column shift automatic. I plan on putting in a floor shifter and want to change the collar on the column instead of just removing the shifter handle. Does anyone know where I could buy one?

Highway Star Feb 23rd, 09, 5:44 PM I'll second that. texasgilbert Feb 23rd, 09, 5:51 PM Me too. I've been wanting to do mine too. Had an article that showed how to cut it off, epoxy and sand to look smooth like floor shift but I haven't tried it yet. SHIFTY4 Feb 23rd, 09, 5:57 PM i did this on my '65 ChevyII wagon... maybe it'd be of assistance to you: click on image to view album http://inlinethumb10.webshots.com/6089/2089938540058614284S600x600Q85.jpg (http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2089938540058614284TGyPLZ) BlueSS454 Feb 23rd, 09, 5:58 PM You're not going to find one new. The only place to get one is from a donor column. You can also remove the bowl (easy on a non tilt), cut the nub off and fill the hole. I'm working on doing this on a column shift tilt column I have. I got it all the way apart (major PITA by the way), now just have to cut the nub off and figure out what I'm gonna do to fill the hole. You have to use some kind of hand mix epoxy on the bowl since it's made of pot metal and can't be welded too :(. SHIFTY4 Feb 23rd, 09, 6:01 PM the nub hole is a tapered hole, what i did was bend up a small piece of 18ga, installed it in the tapered hole then filled hole with body filler and sanded smooth.... GAGE 1959 Feb 23rd, 09, 6:09 PM EPOXY A SMALL PIECE OF THIN SHEET METAL ON THE INSIDE... THEN ON THE OUT SIDE USE SOME CADALIZED SPOT PUTTY ( THE KIND THATS USED WITH HARDENER ) TO FILL IN THE HOLE ! WORKS GREAT !!! marooned Feb 23rd, 09, 7:16 PM I have one. The bigger problem is the internals for the column. One is made by Guide and the other by someone else( Don't remember been too long ago) One is plastic one is potmetal. The column piece is cammed at the bottom and the insides won't switch. That's what I found anyway. Someone chime in here if they think I'm wrong. I filled and glassed the column piece on mine.... looks perfect. Mike DONTWANT2 Feb 23rd, 09, 9:08 PM I ground mine down, put duct tape inside. Fiberglassed the hole shut and used body filler to finish. Painted and Then removed the tape from inside. Looks fine. LeoP Feb 24th, 09, 5:16 PM try ebay, I am working on a column for a 68 Pontiac GTO and found the upper column parts there, It is already a floor shift column. Good luck. GRN69CHV Feb 24th, 09, 8:15 PM I installed a floor shifter for the auto tranny, just pulled the pin and removed the column lever. 99% of the people looking into the interior never even notice it's not there. I READ A TON ON HERE AND ALL OF YOUR POSTS EITHER HAVE CAPS LOCK OR BOLD OR BOTH< lol CAPS IS SCREAMING, YOU MUST BE A LOUD TALKER, lol. I'M JUST MESSING WITH YA, I AGREE WITH THE EPOXY AND PUDDY, NICE CHEAP FIX, BETTER THAN BUYING A NEW COLUMN. MIKE Randy 67EC Feb 25th, 09, 7:24 AM Or you could put an aftermarket tach on the nub. My Auto Meter tach could have been mounted to the nub, but I didn't since I have a 3 on the tree column and it didn't want to stay still. Maybe later when I figure out how to keep it still I may do that. |
