My 72 has a clunking noise when I slowly accelerate at low speeds. I got under the car (with jack stands) and when I rotated the posi equipped rear end, I could duplicate the sound. It sounds as if it is coming from the front of the driveshaft. Any similars or suggestions?

U-Joints? They tend to "clunk" when shifting from forward to reverse.

I agree. change em now before you pole vault the rear end of your car!

I changed the u-joints and still have the noise. It is not when I go from park to drive. It happens when I am going under 5 mph and then accelerate or accelerate around corners. I can feel the clunk vibration under the floorboard. Everything feels tight under the car. I'm thinking rear end but not sure. I have a posi rear end.....HELP

More than likely what the sound is is the posi clutches. I had the same noise in my Chevelle when I changed the oil and didnt use posi additive, maybe it was a coincidence but after I put the additive in it went away. Just a Thought

How is the condition of your rear tranny mount ? could the rubber be separating from the mount ?
Is this problem occuring when going straight or turning ?
Could you have a exhaust mounting problem ?
Just a few questions to help find your trouble smile.gif

Sounds to me like you may have bad bushings holding in your differential. Also check the holes where the bolt goes through the bushing, it may have went from round to oval resulting in a clunk noise when accelerating or deaccelerating. I had the same problem with my 69 and thought that it was a U-joint. :D

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I will be checking all of those things on my days off this week. I will let you know what it is once I find it but you have given me a direction to go.

This Team Chevelle site has been awesome. I am going to join right away.

I checked all of the possible problems you guys listed except the additive. I will be doing that tomorrow. Everything feels and looks ok though. One thing I found and don't know if it is normal. When I pull on the hubs, the axles come out to the side about a 1/6th to an 1/8th of an inch. Is this side play for the axles normal? It makes the clunking sound when I pull on them.

The noise only happens at very slow speeds when I accelerate both straight and around corners.
