: Removing undercoating and rocker panels ??

I have some rusted thru areas in my rear wheel wells where the trunk floor meets the well. All of the trunk floor and 98% of the wheel well steel is completely intact (full thickness) so I will not be replacing them. I want to weld in some 18 ga +/- patches in these areas on the wheel side of the well where the factory undercoating is. I will then be applying fiberglass to those areas inside the trunk. Aftwr that, I will be applying a spray or roll on truck bed liner to the inside of the trunk.

Two questions:

What is the best way to remove the undercoating (chemically?) to expose clean steel for welding? My grinder and sanding disks are just getting clogged.

Also, specifically, how do I remove the rocker panels? I have some issues there also.

This car spent 30 years in New Jersey and I have most of the remnant rust taken care of and these are the last issues to address. This will be a bracket racer, so I am not looking for perfection/show quality stuff here. Only functionality ;)

Thanks y'all

A 4" grinder with a cup brush is all I used, worked well for me.

IDK on the rockers, mine are good to go.

if you have rubber undercoating, use an electric heat gun with a metal scraper to peel the undercoating off. then you can use a wirebrush on a grinder to clean up the rest completely.

you can also use a torch if you dont have a heatgun but be careful how much you heat it to avoid warpage, just enough to soften the undercoating. this method worked well for me with my undercarriage.

wear a mask, goggles, and long sleeves. the wirebrushing turns into a messy job

hope that helps
