You guys have helped me out before with some great ideas...my car will start shaking/vibrating around 55 mph and then kind of smooths out around 70 mph. Any thoughts?

AZ,

Could be any number of things. Out of balance or out of round tire(s) are the first things that come to mind. Possibly also warn front suspension components (steering links, shocks, bushings).

Did this just recently start happening? If so, have you changed anything? Is the vibration only vehicle speed related?

This car was my Grandma's who passed away, and I aquired the car. So I can't tell you if it has always done it. The car did it when I picked it up out of storage and continued when I replaced the rally wheels with Cragers. So it is highly possible that the suspension has never had maintenance. The poor thing sat unused for years.

AZ,

Since you've replaced the wheels/tires and it still does it one would have to logically rule them out at this point.

I'll then go to my second guess. Given the age of the car, that it sat unused for a long time, and you don't know it's maintanence history - you should have the front - and even the rear suspension inspected. Be prepared for bad news though. Bushings, ball joints, tie rods (inner and outer), idler arm, shocks.

Unless you are able to assess the condition of these components yourself, try to take it to someone you know and trust because anyone one else is just going to look at the age of the car and tell you to replace everything, taking you to the cleaners in the process.

Good luck,

Dan

Where are you in Az? I would be more than happy to look at the car with you if you are in the local area. I would suspect suspension or possibly a ujoint. Let me know if I can be of any help

ive got a 70 ss ive been working on for years with sameproblem. thought it was the rear wheels as i had 14 in centers welded in 15 in rims.i just lived with it as i had other issues to fix first.i addressed this issue by buying 2 new 15x 8 wheels from coker tire only to discover i still had the same problem.while having the front end checked out which was ok we discovered a bent rear axle flange.i swapped wheels ,drive shaft ,transmission mounts, and rebalanced tires from my sons 71 ss w/o success only to find it was the axle.thanks raytayky

To those who offered to look at the car, I live in Gold Canyon...east of Apache Junction. A bit too far from Tucson...and not sure if Gilbert considers it too much a distance. It may be a drive, but we have some great scenery out here.

I had this same problem happen to me on a 69 Chevelle. All the tires were good as also the wheels, all the front end parts tie rods, ball joints, idler arm, pittman arm ,etc where all good. Turned out to be the front wheel bearings. Once I replaced both sides wheel bearings (inner and outer ) and new seals, the problem was solved.
